2024 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Welfare & Poverty

Phil Scott: Housing is key; remove impediments to growth

The fact is, Act 250 did exactly what it was intended to do. It slowed down growth, and in some cases, stopped it altogether. But it was enacted at a time when we were growing way too fast. Today we face a different reality--one where families desperately need homes, and communities need reinvestment. Housing is key, and it's something we can do right now. So let's work together and get more families in homes faster, and at a cost they can afford.

Katie Hobbs: Help working-class families with down payment assistance

I was born and raised in an Arizona where a middle-class family could buy their own home. That should be the reality for the next generation, too--but to make it so we must take action. That's why today I am announcing the Arizona Is Home Mortgage Assistance Program. This program will help working-class families throughout the state with down payment assistance and mortgage interest rate relief.

Josh Shapiro: We're funding the summer food program so no kid goes hungry

We're continuing to fund universal free breakfast during the school year, but we're also making sure no kid goes hungry during the summer by funding the summer food service program. That's something we should be proud of. And at a time when some Governors are eschewing federal funding that would ensure kids are well-fed over the summer, we've already shown that we--Pennsylvania Democrats and Republicans alike--care about our kids and that we will come together to feed them.

Maura Healey: MBTA Communities Law: multi-family zoning near transit hubs

Gov. Healey: "We're committed to helping towns meet the MBTA Communities Law"

EOHLC website: Multi-Family Zoning Requirement for MBTA Communities in 177 cities and towns: "This new law requires that an MBTA community shall have at least one zoning district of reasonable size in which multi-family housing is permitted as of right; minimum gross density of 15 units per acre; located not more than 0.5 miles from a commuter rail station, subway station, ferry terminal or bus station; no age restrictions and suitable for families with children."]

Ned Lamont: Our biennial budget doubles our investment in housing

Our biennial budget doubles our investment in housing -- workforce housing, affordable housing, supportive housing, elder housing, and downtown apartments. We are taking this model across the state, and we will be looking for input from towns and cities -- where do you want the housing to be, what is the density, and how far are you from public transportation and schools? The state will be your partner in completing the financing ASAP to get that shovel in the ground.

Jay Inslee: Addressing homelessness with $1B toward new housing

People-focused policies are also how we're addressing homelessness. Washingtonians can see that dozens of encampments along our highways are gone and that'll continue if we make the necessary investments. And they're going to see thousands more new housing units thanks to our work as well. I want to thank this Legislature for going big on housing last session and trusting that it was a necessary decision to put $1 billion toward new housing already this biennium.

Tim Walz: Multifamily housing for seniors, veterans, and homeless

Our plan also invests in making sure every Minnesotan has a safe and affordable place to call home. We're backing the development of multifamily housing so that seniors, families, and anyone facing homelessness can find a place to be. And we want to update the Minneapolis Veterans Home to better serve those who have served us.
