Gloria Johnson in 2024 TN Senate race

On Abortion: Women should be trusted to make their own medical decisions

Tennesseans are fed up with corrupt, "do nothing" politicians, like Marsha Blackburn, who has taken millions from the pharmaceutical industry, the NRA and the insurance industry while voting against lowering drug costs, against gun reform, and for denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. Tennessee women deserve a Senator who trusts them to make their own medical decisions, unlike Blackburn who called the repeal of Roe v. Wade "a blessing" and has long supported a federal abortion ban.

On Civil Rights: Disgusted with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Tennessee

She's also disgusted with how the State house has attacked the LGBTQ+ community. "Arguably, we're more anti-LGBTQ+ than any other state, passing something like 24 bills against the queer community so far. Just this week, we passed an anti-trans sports bill. It shouldn't be up to a bunch of white men deciding who should participate in high school and college sports, it should be up to the sports authorities, like the NCAA, to decide the rules, not us," she stated emphatically.

On Crime: FBI agent Dad investigated wickedness of Ku Klux Klan

Early on Gloria's family instilled in her the drive to put people first, no matter the cost. Growing up, Gloria remembers sleeping in the hallway of their family home, instead of her bedroom, to avoid gunshots from the KKK. The Klan terrorized her family because Gloria's Dad, an FBI Special Agent, had the courage to investigate their wickedness in the Deep South and bring members of the KKK to justice.

On Drugs: 81% want cannabis reform, but state GOP won't allow a vote

They're not working for the constituents, the reality is this supermajority up here. Eighty-one percent of Tennesseans want cannabis reform and they won't let it out of the subcommittee. Seventy-plus percent of Tennesseans want Medicaid expansion and they won't let it out of the subcommittee. Eighty-four percent want paid family leave and they're only doing it in a small way for a small segment of state employees.

On Education: Fed up with pols attacking public school students & teachers

A special education teacher of 27 years, Gloria was fed up with elected officials attacking the rights of public school students and teachers. After the legislature took away a teacher's seat at the table, she decided to run for the Tennessee House in Knoxville in 2012--she won and has been fighting to hold extreme politicians and special interests accountable ever since.

On Government Reform: Gerrymandering limits number of Democrats in legislature

Democracy dies in the dark, and that's what's happening here. By silencing those dissenting voices, and by gerrymandering folks where we should have 45% of the House floor be Democrats, but because of gerrymandering, it's only 25%, and they can roll over us, not allow us to speak, ignore our voices, cut our mics and all of those things.

On Gun Control: Demanded gun safety measures after mass school shooting

When a murderer stole the lives of three 9-year-olds and three adults in a mass school shooting in Tennessee, Gloria once again stood tall for victims of injustice. As a member of the "Tennessee Three" she demanded Republican politicians in Nashville stop with the BS and pass gun safety measures to prevent future shootings. For speaking truth to power, Republican leaders tried to kick her out of office. But Gloria survived the politically charged expulsion vote.

On Health Care: Every family should have access to affordable health care

[On healthcare support]:"You've got to speak to the young people if you want them to come out and vote," she told the crowd. "You got to talk about the things that they care about. We'll be talking about gun violence. We'll be talking about equality."

"We need to make sure that every family has access to affordable health care, that every kid has a great school in every district," she added. "It shouldn't matter where you live."

On Social Security: We need to keep Social Security intact and solvent

[On retirement planning]: "We need to keep social security intact. We can do that, we can make sure it's solvent, all those things. We can do that, people rely on that money when they retire. They paid into it. How dare we think about, for even a second, think about taking away the dollars that people have been paying into their entire life."

On Tax Reform: Tax cuts need to be for working families & middle class

[On taxation]: "If we're talking about cutting taxes, it needs to be for working families and the middle class, not the wealthy and well-connected," she said.

On Drugs: Rated A by NORML: legalize marijuana, and tax it

On Foreign Policy: Supports aid to Ukraine & ceasefire in Gaza

I am proud to stand in support of Ukraine against Russian aggression, and have supported military and humanitarian aid, as well as continued economic sanctions against Russia. In regards to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, I condemned the barbaric attack on Israel by Hamas. I support an immediate ceasefire in the region, along with providing crucial humanitarian aid to Gaza. The longer innocents are being killed, the further we get from a solution.

On Free Trade: Strengthen trade partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region

I believe that our foremost responsibility is to be a voice for peace, while honoring our commitment to preserving democracy and avoiding sending American troops to fight overseas. With China, we need to focus on strengthening trade partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region to counter China's influence, and increase competition through technological innovations.

On Immigration: Approach reform in a compassionate, humanitarian way

We need leaders who are willing to come together and pass the Bipartisan Border Security Agreement--which would increase security at our border, and add new technology to track and stop fentanyl from entering the U.S.-- and we need to approach immigration reform in a compassionate, humanitarian way instead of fear mongering. We need to break that partisan gridlock that has stalled meaningful reform over the last 20 years.
