Carl Sherman: Support for the LGBTQ is a deeply held moral obligation

I am a strong ally to the LGBTQ community. As a Pastor, I believe we are all created by God and our creator made all of us from one. It is that unity of thought, concern, compassion and understanding that I seek to serve the needs of the LGBTQ community. Support for the LGBTQ is a deeply held moral obligation for me. As a Pastor, I am very troubled when human beings attempt to usurp the authority and love of God.

Carl Sherman: Defend women & ethnic groups whose rights are under assault

State representative Carl Sherman announced the long-awaited start of his U.S. Senate campaign against Ted Cruz. Sherman, a 57-year-old Church of Christ pastor from the Dallas County city of DeSoto, is the third prominent Democrat to throw his hat in the ring.

Without uttering Cruz's name, Sherman, in his campaign announcement, said he was running to defend all Texans whose rights are "under assault," including women, members of underrepresented ethnic groups, and the LGBTQ community. "We have a nation of leaders who have forgotten the least of these," the pastor said, referencing Jesus's exhortation in Matthew 25 to serve those in need. "What good are you if you will not concern yourself with those who God is concerned about?"

Colin Allred: Transgender folks should not be discriminated against

[Democratic challenger Colin] Allred was put on the defensive when he was asked about a series of ads accusing the Dallas Democrat of supporting legislation that would allow men to use women's restrooms and boys to play in girls' sports. "What I think is that folks should not be discriminated against," Allred said. "What Senator Cruz should try to explain to you is why he thinks they should."

[Republican incumbent Ted Cruz] also blasted Allred for recently signing onto a letter that urged GOP lawmakers to strike from an annual defense policy bill provisions that include "restricting medically necessary care for transgender service members" and restricting the use of Pride flags on bases. "You know what he argued for? Military bases should have drag shows and should be able to fly a transgender flag above it," Cruz said. "Call me old-fashioned--I think the only flag that should fly above our military base should be the American flag."
