Colin Allred in 2024 TX Senate race
On Energy & Oil:
Be aggressive on carbon recapture, but tell people the truth
We can find important reductions and we need to work on the technology that is starting to come online of carbon recapture to try and find ways to be really aggressive about this. But it has to be done in a way that's realistic. We have to tell people
the truth, which is that it's not like we're going to move away from oil and gas in the next five years, the next ten years. It's going to be a part of our mixture of energy that we're going to continue to have.

On Families & Children:
Was the first member of Congress to take paternity leave
Allred's history has been integral to his campaigns and his time in office. He was the first member of Congress to take paternity leave from office and is part of a bipartisan group working to advance paid parental leave legislation. "I never knew
my father, so I made a promise to myself a long time ago that when I became a dad, I would do it right," Allred said in his campaign announcement video.

On Foreign Policy:
Biden did a good job in uniting free world against Russia
It's been inspiring to me to see a young democracy defending itself against the brutal dictator [Vladimir Putin] who's trying to recreate and reconstitute the Soviet Union. We just can't accept that. I think we have to continue to support them in their
fight for freedom, and it's not just the United States. I think President Biden has done an admirable job of bringing really the free world together in rejecting this Russian aggression…their war crimes.

On Free Trade:
Helping African nations makes them stable trading partners
And it's not predatory. Our interest isn't in that they're going to then give us access to a rare earth mine. It's that, then [African partner nations will] be a more stable and productive world partner and global partner and trading partner. …
African leaders want us to come in and do more. They want us to be more active. They don't want to have only the choice of China or nothing.

On Gun Control:
For raising age to buy semi-automatic file to 21
Allred touched on other issues that toe the more traditional Democratic line. He called for raising the age to buy semi-automatic rifles to 21, the implementation of red flag laws, and establishing a universal background check system.
Allred also criticized the Trump tax cuts on the grounds that they worsened the deficit and by extension the $32 trillion national debt.

On Immigration:
Process people at the border faster, system is broken
They need to have more resources to put into our border communities, to deal with the surge. We need to process people faster. The asylum process is too slow…Some of it is on Congress. Our immigration system is broken, it's only so much any
administration can do. Just saying you are going to build a wall is not a solution. Yes, we have some physical barriers there, we want to channel folks to ports of entry, but it's much more complicated than that.

On Principles & Values:
Grew up with US as leader of the free world, and we are
I grew up learning about the United States being the leader of the free world. And that's what we are. And we can't allow this to happen.
So to me, our support for Ukraine has been vital. It's been the right thing to do is to continue to support them. I believe that they will win.

On Energy & Oil:
Incentives instead of punishment to lower carbon emissions
Allred has pushed his colleagues not to take too punitive an approach on fossil fuels as a way to lower carbon emissions. Instead, he favors financial incentives to grow renewable energy. He also supports permitting reform to streamline environmental
reviews for clean energy & fossil fuel projects, saying both are critical."We have to recognize that we're going to continue to be an energy state, but that energy mix is already incredibly diverse," Allred said. "But also, I am very concerned about
the climate, and about what's happening, and I think we have to be better stewards of the planet."
Allred proposed additional federal investment in technology to capture carbon before it's released into the atmosphere--a proposal popular both within
the fossil fuel industry and with industry-minded climate activists.
[Opponent Roland] Gutierrez has a similar view. He said he wants Texas to become a leader in renewable energy, but he also wants to ensure oil field workers are not left behind.

On Government Reform:
Address voting rights & campaign finance but not term limits
[Opponent Roland] Gutierrez expressed support for term limits for members of Congress. "I don't know if it's two or three [terms], but at some point, you need fresh ideas," he said. Gutierrez already poked at Cruz over the issue in January, when
Gutierrez filed a bill to require U.S. senators from Texas to serve no more than two terms.Allred stopped short of backing term limits but said he understands the rationale behind the idea.
He said legislation to fight partisan gerrymandering, tighten campaign finance laws and expand ballot access would more directly address frustrations with Congress.
"If you're able to address voting rights and campaign finance, which
I think are the two real root causes of most of our problems, then I don't think you have to look at something like term limits," Allred said.

On Gun Control:
What gun safety measures can realistically pass the Senate?
Preventing gun violence is one of [opponent Roland] Gutierrez's top reasons for running. He represents the district where the Uvalde school shooting took place last year and has spent the year energetically pushing for gun restrictions at the
Texas Capitol. "The Safer Communities Act was a good start, but not nearly enough," Gutierrez said of the post-Uvalde federal law that increased background checks for gun buyers under age
21 and created new funding for state gun-safety programs.Allred credited U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for his work advancing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last year, and
Allred said any continued work in gun safety will have to be measured and in line with what can realistically pass a closely divided Senate.

On Health Care:
No single-payer, but public option for Medicare
[Opponent Roland] Gutierrez supports a single-payer health care system like "Medicare for All," calling health care a "universal right."Allred does not support a single-payer insurance plan but supports other initiatives in his party to expand access
to health care, including the creation of a public option to buy Medicare if there are no other affordable alternatives. He introduced a resolution in 2019 to intervene in the Texas lawsuit that sought to overturn the Affordable Care Act and lobbied to
expand ACA subsidies through 2025 for those impacted if Texas were to pass Medicaid expansion. Texas remains one of 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid under the ACA.
Gutierrez said he wants to eliminate the ability of "rogue governors like
Greg Abbott" to decline Medicaid expansion.
As a senator, Allred said he would also focus on bringing down prescription drug costs and creating incentives to expand the number of doctors and nurses.

On Immigration:
E-verify paired with pathways to citizenship
Allred's approach to the border is in line with moderates of his party. He advocated for pairing border security measures championed by Republicans, including mandated E-Verify to confirm the citizenship status of prospective employees, with pathways
to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country. He backed efforts by the Biden administration to direct asylum-seekers to request asylum online from their home countries as well as creating visa programs to meet U.S. economic and
labor needs.Allred has previously voted on legislation to expand funding for the U.S. Border Patrol and for physical barriers to direct migrants to ports of entry. But he dismissed a border wall stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the
Pacific Ocean, as former President Donald Trump advocated, as "ridiculous" and a waste of money.
[Opponent Roland] Gutierrez was also critical of a border wall, calling it a waste of time, money and resources. He said he favored a pathway to residency.

Smart investments in affordable child care & early education
I was raised by a single mom, who was a public school teacher. When I think about service, I think about how we can work to help families like mine growing up. To strengthen Texas, we must build the ladders of opportunity so everyone has the chance
to chase their dreams. Through smart investments in affordable child care, early childhood education, job and skills training and expanding health care coverage we can increase
productivity and grow our economy in a way that works for everyone. By making investments in our families, our workers and our infrastructure,
we can strengthen our economy and ensure we are prepared to compete with anyone--while also lowering our debt.

On Principles & Values:
Fourth-generation Texan; graduate of Baylor University
My story is a uniquely Texas story. I am a fourth-generation Texan, and I was born and raised in Dallas by a single mom who was a public school teacher. With help from my aunt and uncle, my mom and I moved to North Dallas, where my mom, aunt and uncle
still live a street apart. When not at a YMCA camp, I often spent summers visiting my grandmother in Brownsville, where my mom was raised and where my grandfather was a customs officer after fighting in the Pacific with the Navy in World War II.
After graduating from Hillcrest, I earned a full-ride scholarship to play football at Baylor and trained for the NFL draft in Houston. My wife, Aly, and I are proud to be raising our family here in Dallas and I could not be more excited about
my boys' future as Texans. People from across this state have shaped me into who I am today and I know we are so much better than Ted Cruz makes us out to be.

Invest billions in infrastructure & CHIPs Act for high-tech
Q: What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?A: I am running for Senate to give Texans the honest, pragmatic leadership we deserve. I'm proud to have been named the most bipartisan member of the
Texas Congressional Delegation, and I have shown during my time in Congress that I can deliver for Texans. Whether that is fighting to protect the
Affordable Care Act, and with it protections for folks with preexisting conditions, capping the cost of insulin at $35 per month and lowering the cost of prescription drugs for seniors on
Medicare or passing billions of dollars in investments in infrastructure as well as the CHIPs Act to invest high-tech manufacturing.

On Abortion:
When Ted Cruz says he's pro-life, he doesn't mean yours
[Democratic challenger Colin] Allred has made restoring abortion access a key part of his campaign, while [Republican incumbent Ted] Cruz has largely avoided the issue. Pressed on where he stands on the question of rape and incest exceptions, Cruz said
the matter should be settled at the state level and declined to stake out a position. "You know, Congressman Allred is running all sorts of ads saying that I made this decision," Cruz said. "I don't serve in the state Legislature. I'm not the governor."
Allred has leaned into the state abortion ban in the homestretch of the election, disputing Cruz's characterization of himself as "pro-life." "You're not pro-life," Allred said, turning to address
Cruz. "It's not pro-life to deny women care so long that they can't have children anymore. It's not pro-life to force a victim of rape to carry their rapist's baby. Understand that when Ted Cruz says he's pro-life, he doesn't mean yours."

On Civil Rights:
Transgender folks should not be discriminated against
[Democratic challenger Colin] Allred was put on the defensive when he was asked about a series of ads accusing the Dallas Democrat of supporting legislation that would allow men to use women's restrooms and boys to play in girls' sports. "What I think
is that folks should not be discriminated against," Allred said. "What Senator Cruz should try to explain to you is why he thinks they should."[Republican incumbent Ted Cruz] also blasted Allred for recently signing onto a letter that urged
GOP lawmakers to strike from an annual defense policy bill provisions that include "restricting medically necessary care for transgender service members" and restricting the use of Pride flags on bases. "You know what he argued for?
Military bases should have drag shows and should be able to fly a transgender flag above it," Cruz said. "Call me old-fashioned--I think the only flag that should fly above our military base should be the American flag."

On Foreign Policy:
Bring hostages home; Hamas must be held accountable
Allred, when asked about the Oct. 7 attack, called it a horrific terrorist attack, the worst against Jewish people since the holocaust. He said it's time to reach a settlement to bring hostages home and that Hamas must be held accountable.
He also said that Cruz had voted against a bill that would have provided funding to Israel, as well as to Taiwan and Ukraine.
Cruz accused Allred of consistently lining up against Israel and said the bill he voted against would provide money to Gaza. He said he also voted in favor of a bill providing emergency weapons to Israel, and said Allred voted against it. When asked if
Israel bears any responsibility for the tens of thousands of civilian deaths in Gaza, Cruz said there is no country on Earth that fights a more humane, more targeted and more just war than the people of Israel.

On Immigration:
Don't fall into demonizing in talking about border security
[Noted incumbent Ted] Cruz, "When Donald Trump was president, I worked hand in hand with President Trump to secure the border, and we achieved incredible success. We produced the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 years.
That's what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris inherited. It's what Colin Allred inherited, and they deliberately broke it and opened the border, and Texas is paying the price. "
[Democratic challenger Colin] Allred responded, "Listen, what I've always said is that we have to make sure that as we're talking about border security, that we don't fall into demonizing and you can take something out of context from seven years ago,
which is what he's trying to do, but he doesn't want to talk about what he said this year, which is that we don't need a border bill."
