Hilary Franz in 2024 WA Governor's race

On Abortion: I'll ensure that WA is a sanctuary for reproductive care

I know from personal experience how important access to affordable reproductive care is. I'll always fight for reproductive freedom, strike down extremist attacks, and ensure that WA is a sanctuary for reproductive care.

On Drugs: Criminal justice sector not set up to handle addiction

Franz said she believes the state needs to hold the people distributing the drugs accountable, and reform the criminal justice sector that's currently "not set up to handle addiction."

"I know, having worked in the mental health sector as well as work in the criminal justice sector, that we've got to do more to help in the area of bringing science and bringing safety and bringing compassion to this work."

On Free Trade: Trade war with China has had significant impact on state

China is the number one market for Washington's geoducks, responsible for roughly 90% of the state's export of the distinct, large clams, totaling upwards of 11 million pounds. According to Franz, the ongoing U.S. trade war with China has geoduck prices down to around $7 a pound, a $4 decrease. "Our goal is to continue to raise our voice and have the public raise their voice too, so we can end this trade war that has had significant impact for Washington state," said Franz.

On Immigration: Supports legal status for firefighting DREAMers

The firefighting fates of Noe Vazquez and Christian Garcia Herrera are in limbo until the federal government reaches a deal on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. "As our wildfire fighter seasons become larger and longer, and we are seeing even greater need for more people stepping up to be firefighters, we need to make sure that we value people like Noe and Christian," Franz continued. "What are we trying to accomplish by denying legal status to Dreamers. Who is better off?"

On Principles & Values: Was kidnapped by close family member at age 3

When she was 3 years old, Franz says she was taken from her bed, her house, her friends and her toys. She recalls being told she would never see her father again. Franz and her older sister spent nine months in the early 1970s traveling after being kidnapped from her father by a close family member during what she described as a "volatile and tumultuous" chapter of her childhood. It's an experience she says shapes who she is, her political priorities and how she would lead as governor.

On Tax Reform: Raising taxes may be needed to address homelessness

Franz said raising taxes could be needed to help those experiencing homelessness. "I do think we need to look at opportunities for generating more revenue," said Franz, "Though it shouldn't be necessarily on the backs of working families." Franz said oil companies should be held accountable if they are gouging drivers with gas prices, which were highest in the nation earlier this year.

On Homeland Security: Support our veterans and military families

[On announcing she will run for Congress after dropping out of 2024 governor's race]: "Over the last few months, I've talked to voters in every corner of Washington and heard the same concerns--rising prices for necessities like housing pushing families out of the middle class, protecting reproductive freedom and women's rights, safeguarding our democracy, supporting our veterans and military families, and the climate crisis bearing down on us," Franz said in a news release Friday.

On Environment: $500M for DNR to prevent wildfires

Hilary Franz, the state public lands commissioner, deserves credit for pushing into the politics of Olympia to raise the profile of DNR, thereby securing $500 million from the Legislature to fight and prevent wildfires and increasing the department's budget by 60% during her two terms in office.

It took more than a caretaker to do that; it took a politician. Being out front in the political arena may have served Franz's career aspirations--but it also served the people of this state.

On Foreign Policy: Special relationship with Israel more important than ever

[On the Israel-Gaza War]: "I believe that Israel, like any sovereign nation, has the right to defend itself against threats. Hamas must be destroyed so the events of October 7th cannot repeat and peace can be on the horizon again," Franz said in her position paper. "The special relationship between the United States and Israel is rooted in common values of democracy and equality and has stood for decades against threats to these values. It is more important today than ever."

On Health Care: I'll work to lower the Medicare age & expand benefits

Franz: It's crucial that everyone has affordable and available medical care. That's why I'll work to lower the Medicare age, expand vision, dental and hearing benefits to traditional Medicare, and expand Medicare drug negotiation. I'll also push for full Medicare reimbursement--preventing hospital closures and allowing doctors to spend more time with patients, not on paperwork. I'll also work to boost funding for community clinics, especially for mental health and addiction services.

On Social Security: Supports providing benefits for people caring for elderly

Franz: My father was diagnosed with dementia at 65. I cared for him for a decade with three boys below my hip. I had to literally experience not only finding childcare but also finding elder care. And we were able to bring caregiving in, but it was expensive, and it was hard to find. I support right up front the Long Term Care Workforce Support Act. I also support the Security Caregiver Credit Act to provide Social Security benefits to the people who are serving and caring for our elderly.
