2024 WA Governor's race: on Tax Reform

Hilary Franz: Raising taxes may be needed to address homelessness

Franz said raising taxes could be needed to help those experiencing homelessness. "I do think we need to look at opportunities for generating more revenue," said Franz, "Though it shouldn't be necessarily on the backs of working families." Franz said oil companies should be held accountable if they are gouging drivers with gas prices, which were highest in the nation earlier this year.

Mark Mullet: Voted against capital gains tax to fund state's schools

Mullet memorably voted against levying a capital gains tax on the wealthy to fund our schools two years ago--a tax that is now bringing in crucially needed revenue for our kids and our schools. He was only one of three Democratic senators to do so.

Mark Mullet: We can't keep solving every problem by creating a new tax

[On taxes & spending]: 'I'm one hundred percent convinced that will make housing affordable. I'm one hundred percent convinced that we could fight climate change without having the highest gas prices in the country, and I'm one hundred percent convinced that we can't keep solving every problem by creating a new tax,' said Mullet. 'Every tax, not one on its own, but once you start adding them it that slowly makes a state unaffordable.'

Bob Ferguson: Surtax on big banks makes state's tax system fairer

The Washington Supreme Court unanimously upheld a new tax on big banks aimed at providing essential services and improving the state's regressive tax system. The 1.2% business and occupation surtax--a tax added on top of other taxes--was passed by the Legislature in 2019. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson called the ruling "a win for those fighting to make Washington's tax system fairer."

Dave Reichert: Deal with substantially increased taxes and spending

The Cost of Living in Washington State is out of control. Since Governor Inslee took office in 2013, The CATO Institute has given the state of Washington an "F" on its biennial fiscal report card. The people of Washington State have dealt with substantially increased taxes and spending which has led the State's Cost of Living to be too high to bear. We must address housing affordability, rising food prices, provide transparency within our government and relief for our small businesses.
