2024 WA Governor's race: on Welfare & Poverty

Semi Bird: Cause of homelessness is mental illness, not affordability

It is important to understand that the root cause of homelessness in Washington State is not a matter of affordable housing, but rather an epidemic of mental illness. The current administration has spent over 800 million taxpayer dollars to address this issue, only to see a 10% increase in homelessness over the past year.

Dave Reichert: Appoint Director of Homelessness: apply what's working

Washington had the sixth highest homelessness in the U.S. last year. Between 2020 and 2022, Washington experienced a 15.6% increase in homelessness, the fourth largest increase in homelessness in the nation. The first thing I would do is appoint someone as the Director of Homelessness in Washington state. You've got to be efficient about this. Somebody in charge to find out what's working, apply money to what's working, and find other programs.
