Blanche Lambert Lincoln in Arkansas Senate Debate

On Abortion: Take objective approach to judicial confirmation process

HOLT: During questioning from a panel of reporters, Holt, who served one term in the state House before being elected to the state Senate, said he opposes abortion and would not support any judicial candidate who supported abortion rights.

LINCOLN: Lincoln said she tries to take an objective approach to the judicial confirmation process and doesn’t want a judicial candidate “who interprets the laws based on their personal views and political views.”

On Civil Rights: Oppose amending the federal constitution to ban gay marriage

LINCOLN: “Domestic laws have always been dealt with by our states,” Lincoln said, noting that the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and offers states the right to refuse to recognize them. “Amending the federal constitution ... should only be as a last resort,” Lincoln said.

HOLT: Holt said marriage is one of the fundamental pillars of society and he fears that a judge might rule Arkansas’ law unconstitutional. He also said he opposes activist judges, such as those who have ruled in favor of gay marriage. Without a federal amendment defining marriage, Holt said, “our country will fall.”

On Health Care: Can’t get our arms around the uninsured

“I hear it from corporations, parents, single people, the young and the elderly,” she said. “We can’t get our arms around the uninsured. That’s the problem,” Lincoln said. When people can’t afford to pay in to the insurance system, the insured and taxpayers are left with the expense of their treatment, she said. “There’s not one particular bill, or pill, that’s going to make us all better,” Lincoln said of health care.

On Homeland Security: Seniority concerns shouldn’t outweigh intelligence decisions

LINCOLN: Reform of intelligence gathering, Lincoln said, “was not a battle between Democrats and Republicans as much as it was an argument over seniority. People in Congress who’d built up seniority over agencies in the committee system don’t want to see it changed.” In Iraq, Americans are going to have to accept the decisions Iraqis make themselves if they want Democracy to work there, Lincoln said.

HOLT: Holt said he trusts Bush’s decisions and recommendations when it comes to homeland security.

On Tax Reform: Like to see tax cuts for the lower and middle class

HOLT: Holt said he supports Bush’s tax cuts and believes taxes should be cut further.

LINCOLN: Lincoln said she would like to see tax cuts for the lower and middle class, but would like to see those in the higher income brackets taxed more.
