On Abortion: NY fund for abortion costs of women coming from out-of-state

As the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments on a Mississippi anti-abortion law that could dramatically curtail the ability of women across the US to access safe and legal abortions, Letitia James today called for the state of New York to establish a dedicated fund that would help support and provide financial resources to women across the country so that they could continue to make their own reproductive choices. The Supreme Court is hearing the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization today and will determine whether a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks, with very few exceptions, should be upheld, calling into question the fundamental premise of Roe v. Wade. Because these effects will be especially harsh in states that impose exceedingly strict limitations on abortion, A.G. James is today proposing a fund that will cover the costs for women living in these states to travel to New York, as well as cover accommodations and costs of an abortion.

On Gun Control: 18 gun buybacks took 2,700 firearms off streets since 2019

New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 56 firearms were turned in to law enforcement at a gun buyback event hosted by her office and the Poughkeepsie Police Department. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) accepts--with no questions asked--working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation on site. To date, Attorney General James has taken nearly 2,700 firearms out of communities through gun buyback events and other efforts since taking office in 2019.

"Over the past year, areas throughout New York state have experienced record high levels of gun violence and devastation," said Attorney General James. "In an effort to crack down on this violence and protect our communities, we held 18 gun buybacks and successfully took nearly 2,100 guns off the streets. Every gun that is turned in at our gun buybacks is a potential tragedy averted and a potential life saved."

On Jobs: Support unionization of Starbucks for fairer pay

Attorney General James has consistently fought for workers' rights and stood in solidarity with workers to demand fairer pay and stronger protections. She released a statement in support of the Starbucks unionization efforts in Buffalo:

"Once again, New York's workers are leading the way as national changemakers and leaders in the labor movement. I applaud and congratulate Starbucks employees in Buffalo for successfully unionizing--a feat that has never been done before in this country. Taking on the resources and tactics of a multi-billion-dollar corporation is not easy, but these workers were unwavering in their commitment to better pay and working conditions in their store. Their efforts in Buffalo will continue to inspire organizing in New York and the United States. This is only the beginning, and I will always stand with our workers in the fight for their rights and protections under the law."
