State of Alaska secondary Archives: on Energy & Oil

Les Gara: Require state buildings to be energy efficient & renewables

In 2010 I wrote and passed amendments to save money and battle climate change. Today all state, University and school buildings must be built to cost-effective energy efficiency standards. That saves money and reduces the emission of greenhouse gasses.

Governor Dunleavy has killed 6,000 good paying jobs just by ducking our fiscal crisis and demanding a decimated construction budget. Our austerity construction budget has taken away good paying jobs, harms businesses, and leaves less money to circulate through our economy. It's left Alaska's main port, and our roads and infrastructure across the state unmaintained. It's prevented needed energy projects, including renewable energy projects that can lower the high cost of electricity and heating.

Les Gara: Supports "responsible" oil development and mining

Gara has voted for oil development including in ANWR, lobbied the Obama Administration to allow ConocoPhillips' CD-5 oil development, and has supported Alaska's existing mines. "I support responsible development but believe we should get a fair share for our oil. And we can't endanger the greatest fishing in the world, and a way of life in Bristol Bay, with the toxic Pebble Mine.

Tony Knowles: Seek ANWR through a bill that sets tougher mileage standards

MURKOWSKI: "We needed two votes in the last go-'round [of the ANWR vote]. With a Republican-led majority, you get it on the agenda. We pick up these seats. We have George Bush in office. And we get ANWR next year. That's the strategy."

KNOWLES: Instead of trying to push a "partisan, secret, pork-filled bill that's now lying dead on the floor of Congress," an Alaska senator needs to seek ANWR through a bill that also sets tougher mileage standards for cars and requires power plants to use a certain percentage of renewable fuels, he said. "That's the balance that I believe is going to bring about the development of ANWR and the gas line," he said.
