State of Alaska secondary Archives: on Government Reform

Les Gara: Protect salmon and trout waters from mining operation

As an avid fisherman who's travelled throughout Rural and Urban Alaska, I know we need to protect our commercial, sport and subsistence fishing and hunting, and our access to those resources. Fishing binds Alaskans of all backgrounds. Governor Dunleavy has chosen to Side with the Pebble Mine owners, and to threaten Bristol Bay's world's greatest wild salmon and trout waters. I've voted to support our other mines that operate across the state. But Pebble is the wrong mine in the wrong place.

Scott Kohlhaas: Qualified candidates for Senate deserve to be heard equally

According to the latest elections data, more than 52 percent of the state's 469,042 voters are registered as independents or nonpartisans. Republicans and Democrats together represent slightly more than 40 percent of the electorate. "Alaskans deserve better," Kohlhaas said. "The qualified candidates for US Senate deserve to be heard equally."

Tony Knowles: A one-party strategy for America doesn't work

MURKOWSKI: "He has to join a team," Murkowski, the Republican, asserted. "If you decide to caucus with the Democrats, Alaska loses because then it is the Democratic agenda that is on the table." That means no oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, no speeding of land conveyances to the state and Native corporations and no timber harvest in the Tongass National Forest, she said.

KNOWLES: "A one-party strategy for America doesn't work. I sued Bill Clinton five different times as governor. But then I worked with him on the Denali KidCare program and opening up [the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska]. You don't pick your candidates or your friends on personalities. You do it for what's right for Alaska. That's what Ted Stevens has always done and I'll be a good partner with Ted Stevens putting Alaskans first, working on both sides of the aisle."
