State of Arizona secondary Archives: on Welfare & Poverty

Frank Riggs: Entitlement society encourages dependency on government

I believe in the politics of opportunity: equal opportunity that encourages personal initiative and responsibility, not equal outcomes. I believe the way to break the cycle of poverty is to provide a great education and the "right to rise" for all. I've seen firsthand the power of education to transform lives and entire communities. And we must encourage marriage and strong families. Many single parents struggle against heroic odds but the out-of-wedlock birth rate, in Arizona and nationally, is socially and economically unsustainable.

We can't continue to expand government and our entitlement society which encourages dependency on government and ultimately hinders our ability to provide a societal safety net for the truly needy and desperately poor. Limited, constitutional government is effective government.
