BEST program: $1B to fix crumbling and dilapidated schools
Cary took the lead in crafting the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) plan that directs a new stream of funding to repair, renovate and replace crumbling and dilapidated schools across Colorado.
BEST will provide close to $1 billion to K-12 capital construction over the next several years--the largest state investment in school construction in Colorado's history.

Cary Kennedy:
Authored Amendment 23: Fund education & repair schools
Cary is an innovative problem solver for Colorado. As the author of Amendment 23, Cary has been on the forefront of fighting for public education for Colorado's kids.
She crafted the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) program that funded--and continues to fund--the renovation and replacement of hundreds of crumbling and dilapidated schools across Colorado.
As State Treasurer, Cary led the effort to develop a billion-dollar program to help districts repair and replace aging school buildings throughout Colorado with no new or increased state taxes.
Cary wrote Amendment 23 and led the statewide campaign to pass it, prioritizing education funding and avoiding even deeper budget cuts in Colorado public schools.

Cary Kennedy:
Preschool & kindergarten for every child
If I am elected governor, I will make education Colorado's top priority. I will work with our schools and communities to make sure every child gets a great education that is engaging and empowering. We can give every child the opportunity to go to
preschool and kindergarten. We can give our teachers the professional pay they deserve. We can offer technical and professional courses while kids are still in high school. And we can get our kids through college without burdensome debt.

Ed Perlmutter:
Invest in our public education system
A strong educational system helps to ensure a bright future for our children and nation. Ed believes we must invest in our public education system so every child has the opportunity to live the American dream. The Every Child Succeeds
Act (ESSA) is a step in the right direction. States will now set their own standards as well as create their own plans for schools.
ESSA also contains measures to reduce high-stakes testing while maintaining high standards and accountability, decreases the use of disciplinary practices that remove kids from the classroom, and provides better access to high-quality preschools.
Ed supports robust, flexible funding and grant programs enabling schools to provide invaluable learning opportunities.

Ed Perlmutter:
Increase Pell grants; reduce student loan interest rates
Ed believes higher education is a critical component of our ability to remain globally competitive. Ed supports increasing the level of available Pell grants, reducing student loan interest rates, and other initiatives making higher education
more affordable and accessible for everyone. For example,
Ed cosponsors policy proposals to reduce the student debt burden, including increasing the maximum tax deduction for interest paid on any qualified education loan and to allow borrowers to refinance
their federal loans to the lowest available interest rate. He also supports programs that repay student loans in exchange for service to the community, such as the National Health Services Corp.

Mike Johnston:
Teachers are the solution; tenure is the problem
New York Times columnist Frank Bruni wrote a column about Mike's efforts to reform teacher accountability, including the landmark 2010 "Great Students and Teachers" Act, known as SB-191. Mike told Bruni that teachers are the solution, not the problem.
But the current system doesn't enable as many of them as possible to rise to that role, he says. And a prime culprit is tenure, at least as it still exists in most states.
"It provides no incentive for someone to improve their practice," he said. "It provides no accountability to actual student outcomes. It's the classic driver of, 'I taught it, they didn't learn it, not my problem.'
It has a decimating impact on morale among staff, because some people can work hard, some can do nothing, and it doesn't matter."

Mike Johnston:
Harlem charter schools are a success
Mike said that traditional tenure laws restrict principals from building the team they need to ensure student success. Principals with control over that coax better outcomes from students, citing test scores of kids in Harlem who attend the Success
Academy Charter Schools: "You saw that when you could hire for talent and release for talent, you could actually demonstrate amazing results in places where that was never thought possible. It's not the kids who are the problem! It's the system."
