John Carroll: Remove laws that tax island imports & reduce cost of living

Hawaii suffers disproportionately from archaic laws like the Jones Act that increase the cost of all imports to our Island, which forces up the cost of everyday necessities. These constraints on free trade and shipping also makes the export of goods, especially agricultural products prohibitively expensive. Changing Federal law will bring our cost of living back in line. The "Matson Tax" or "Cost of Living in Paradise" are no longer things we should simply tolerate and ignore, it can be set right. Audit all state department budgets and prioritize spending to the areas of facilities, employees, technology, equipment, and supplies.
Expand budget to include future expenses that are essential to the existence of government departments.
Provide online and public transparency of all access to budgets, expenditures, contracts, and audit finding.
Soft shift from tourism to Research and Development.
Start with companies that have a footprint in Hawai'i.
Expand healthcare, education, technology, affordable rental, and permanent housing opportunities in Hawai'i.
Employment opportunities increase because of this shift.
Sustainable industries because of this shift.

Vicky Cayetano: Developing affordable housing rentals a top priority

Studies show that between 25% to 30% of American citizens will be lifetime renters. Those who rent include many who live paycheck to paycheck. These people particularly need our state government's help. The development of affordable housing rentals will be a top priority. Creating effective strategies for an affordable rental plan will require consulting with a wide variety of stakeholders, including builders, contractors, developers, trade unions, community groups and nonprofit organizations.
