Jack Dalrymple: Great need for more and better child care services

A year ago we set out on a state visioning process called "2020 and Beyond," to hear people's own ideas about how to create a better future for our state.

First and foremost, we heard about the great need for more and better child care services throughout the state. This has become a challenge for young parents who would like to contribute more to our workforce. We are already supporting the training of child care providers, but the real challenge is expansion of child care capacity with more facilities. Most child care providers in North Dakota are home-based and have found commercial rental rates to be cost prohibitive. We have tested a cost-share program to provide permanent modular facilities capable of handling 18 children in a custom designed layout. It looks promising and led to our recommendation for a grant program that will help private child care providers get into expanded facilities with very little cost for space.

Kevin Cramer: The #MeToo movement is all about victimization

North Dakota U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Cramer (R) dismissed the #MeToo movement, saying it's "a movement towards victimization," the New York Times reports. Said Cramer: "That you're just supposed to believe somebody because they said it happened."

Invoking his wife, daughters, mother and mother-in-law, he added: "They cannot understand this movement toward victimization. They are pioneers of the prairie. These are tough people whose grandparents were tough and great-grandparents were tough."

Michael Coachman: Committed to God, his family, the Constitution, integrity

The things that stick out the most when hearing from Coachman are his vocal commitment to God, his family, the Constitution, and integrity. He believes in working collaboratively with people and he feels that too often candidates fail their constituents, after being elected to office, by not following through with the promises they've made. Indeed, Coachman believes we need more statesman and less politicians.

Doug Burgum: Vetoed barring biological boys from girl's school sports

HB 1298 (Girls' Fairness in Sports -- Family Policy Alliance recommends voting FOR):

Prevented biological boys from competing against biological girls in public elementary or secondary school sporting events. The bill did not impose requirements on college sports competitions and contained a provision to allow girls to compete on boys' teams.

The bill passed the House multiple times in its original form, survived an effort by the Senate to turn it into solely a study, and eventually passed both chambers and was submitted to Governor Burgum. Governor Burgum vetoed the bill, and upon reconsideration for an override vote, the House of Representatives passed the override, but the bill failed the required 2/3rds majority override vote in the Senate.

HB 1298 (Girls' Fairness in Sports -- Family Policy Alliance recommends voting FOR; Becker voted FOR):

Rick Becker: Traditional nuclear family is backbone of America's success

Q: VALUES: Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman?

A: Strongly Agree. The traditional nuclear family has been the backbone of America's success as a country. The traditional nuclear family offers stability, emotional support, and a strong foundation for children's development. It fosters values, teaches responsibility, and provides a sense of belonging and security.

Q: Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation?

A: Strongly Agree. We must protect our children from harmful transgender and anti-American ideology--plain and simple. Men do not belong in women's sports.

Q: Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

A: Strongly Disagree. Absolutely not. As a physician, I took the Hippocratic oath to do no harm to patients and mutilating children is very harmful.

Kelly Armstrong: Require proof of age on pornographic websites

Piepkorn said the Legislature passing "bad bills" such as a ban on abortion and laws affecting transgender people has kept younger people away from North Dakota.

Armstrong said he would want to see metrics on whether those types of bills are keeping people away from the state. He also said he thinks people should need to show proof of age to enter a pornographic website. "I'm very less worried about what books my kids see in a library as to what they can get on their phone," said Armstrong, referring to book ban bills that were discussed in the past session.

Armstrong said he gets frustrated when people say "culture war issues" with a negative connotation. "I've talked to a lot of people over the course of the last six months in North Dakota and those issues are really, really important to people," Armstrong said. He said much of it comes down to local control because the Stark County school board and the Cass County school board are going to have different issues to address.

Merrill Piepkorn: Attract young people by avoiding "culture war" issues

Piepkorn said the Legislature passing "bad bills" such as a ban on abortion and laws affecting transgender people has kept people away from North Dakota. "That is what makes national headlines and that does not attract younger people to our state, but rather makes them think twice about coming to North Dakota," Piepkorn said.

Armstrong said he would want to see metrics on whether those types of bills are keeping people away from the state. He also said he thinks people should need to show proof of age to enter a pornographic website.
