State of Virginia secondary Archives: on Immigration

Dave Brat: Start by securing our border; never grant amnesty

When addressing the issue of immigration, we must start by securing our border. An open border is both a national security threat and an economic threat that our country cannot ignore. I reject any proposal that grants amnesty and undermines the fundamental rule of law. Adding millions of workers to the labor market will force wages to fall and jobs to be lost. I support proposals that will secure our border, enforce our current laws, and restore an orderly and fair process to allow law abiding individuals to work towards becoming citizens of this great nation.

James Webb: Tamper-proof ID card; stricter enforcement against employers

Q: Do you support a tamper-proof ID card so that employers will know to hire them or not depending on their legality?

MILLER: Yes, in fact, I worked with Congress when that was proposed in 1981. We also need to have very tough employer sanctions, including sending employers to jail if they continue to hire people who are not here without work authorization. That's why people come to this country illegal, to get jobs. Unless we penalize the employers, people are going to continue to come.

Q: Mr. Webb, do you agree?

WEBB: I would agree that we should be using tamper-proof ID cards.

Q: Do you believe in punishing employers who hire people illegally?

WEBB: That is very a complex question because of the whole range of employers that are involved. Certainly large employers you could have sanctions. It's a question of accountability. When somebody is hiring somebody to mow a lawn or something like that, it's a lot different than a Wal-Mart of a Tyson's.

Ralph Northam: Work with federal government to enforce immigration laws

We owe it to our first responders to provide the tools they need to do their jobs effectively. I have fought hard to spare our sheriffs, police, and firefighters from devastating budget cuts.

Being smart on crime is just as important as being tough on crime. We need to take low cost steps to help Virginia's finest do their jobs: [including] working with the federal government to enforce immigration laws, rather than diverting scarce state and local resources from other responsibilities.

Tom Garrett: E-N-D: Erect wall; No benefits; Defund sanctuary cities

Tom Garrett has proposed the E.N.D. Illegal Immigration Plan. E--Erect the Border Wall. N--No Benefits or Employment for Illegal Aliens. D--Defund Sanctuary Cities.

If we do these things, we can end the crisis on our Southern Border and protect American workers from lawbreakers undercutting our labor market. No country can survive if it cannot control its borders. Tom favors tightening our laws and our borders to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into our country. He opposes amnesty for illegal aliens. Tom has led the fight in the General Assembly against illegal immigration and the use of taxpayer dollars to reward illegal immigrants who break our laws. Last year, Tom voted for SB 722, which prevents in-state tuition rates from being extended to illegals. This year, the GA passed Tom's bill, SB 270, that strips funding from sanctuary cities.
