State of North Dakota Archives: on Drugs

Robert Marquette: War on drugs failed just like war on alcohol did

The war on drugs is as failed as the war on alcohol during prohibition of the 1920's and 30's. Since 1971, federal and state governments have spent more than one trillion dollars fighting the war on drugs. In 1980, the United States had 50,000 people in prison for drug violations. Today we have more than half a million. This is a 1000% increase in just 35 years. In 2015 alone, 1.6 million Americans have been arrested for drug violations, and more than 800,000 of them were marijuana related charges.
