State of New Jersey Archives: on Families & Children

Barbara Buono: Passed historic family leave legislation

As the daughter of a butcher and a substitute teacher who struggled to make ends meet, Barbara knows the hardships so many working families face in New Jersey today. She's committed to improving the lives of families like hers.

That's why she passed historic family leave legislation for all New Jerseyans. It's why she's been a champion for raising the minimum wage and indexing it to inflation, so it is a livable wage. And it's why she's fought to protect collective bargaining rights for teachers and firefighters and police officers who have been demonized by Governor Christie.

As Governor, Barbara will continue those fights, for hard-working families across our state who can't afford lawyers and lobbyists, but deserve to have their voices heard in Trenton.

Steve Lonegan: Marriage is the greatest institution; no kids for gays

The two clashed sharply on just about every issue, including gay marriage and abortion. Booker said he supports same-sex marriage, saying "We are all equal under the law."

Lonegan said "marriage is the greatest institution made by man" because "it's about the children." Asked whether he believes gay couples should have children, he quipped: "That would be a biological phenomenon." He then added: "I have mixed feelings about that."

Tammy Murphy: Rooted out institutional racism in pregnancy & childbirth

Pregnancy and childbirth were not easy, but Tammy never questioned if she would survive, or if her babies would get the best care available. That was in great part due to her privilege and the color of her skin. So when Tammy became First Lady, she went to work and launched the Nurture NJ Maternal and Infant Health program to root out the institutional racism that Black and Brown women face in pregnancy and childbirth to reduce preventable deaths.
