Kevin Stitt: Must address state sovereignty over tribal land & peoples

The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma questions the sovereignty of the state as we've known it since 1907. I've invited the leaders of Oklahoma's sovereign tribes to join together and work with the State of Oklahoma. Together, we must create the certainty, fairness and the unity we've enjoyed since 1907. It is critical -- while embracing the tribal heritage of many Oklahomans -- that we don't lose sight of the fact that we are all Oklahomans.

Mary Fallin: $10M for renovation of the State Capitol

Responsible government means making better use of our physical assets. I've worked with agencies to develop a catalogue of state buildings and assets. Our report shows that Oklahoma owns almost 7,000 buildings and leases another 1,000. Many of these properties are underutilized or unproductive. [We should] sell those that are underperforming and redirect those resources to other important state needs.

One of those state needs--an asset that we must maintain--is the State Capitol. The Capitol is a symbol of our state, a place of business and a living museum dedicated to preserving Oklahoma history, literature and art work. It is not right for visitors to be greeted at this building by construction cones, crumbling facades and a faulty sewer system.

That is why I am proposing $10 million be allocated this year to immediately begin addressing repair needs and to chart a course towards a total renovation.

Mary Fallin: We survived Dust Bowl & Trail of Tears--and this recession

It hasn't always been easy for Oklahoma. We have felt the effects of the national recession, and it has been hard. However, we have worked through it, and we will come out stronger. As Oklahomans have done for years, we will continue to manufacture goods and build skyscrapers on the land that was once known as the Dust Bowl. That is the unshakeable spirit of the people of Oklahoma. We are a state that has survived the injustices of the Trail of Tears and the Tulsa Race Riots, the great depression, oil booms and busts and the horrors of the Murrah bombing, only to emerge as a stronger community and a prouder people. That's the Oklahoma Spirit. It's a pioneer spirit, a spirit of resilience and a love for one's neighbors. And it is because of the love, appreciation and respect I have for my fellow Oklahomans that it pains me, as I know it pains you, when we fall short in some areas.
