State of Utah Archives: on Local Issues

Gary Herbert: State Capitol, built a century ago, was built for the future

To everyone assembled here tonight, welcome to our State Capitol. This building symbolizes the pride we have in our past and the optimism we share for Utah's future.

In 1914, when Governor William Spry cemented the cornerstone in place, some wondered why the Capitol needed to be so large when Utah's population was so small. The answer is simple. They were not building for what they were. They were building for what Utah could become.

Just as they laid a solid foundation to make Utah what it is today, it is our responsibility to continue to build upon that foundation and make Utah even stronger.

Tonight, I ask you to join with me in building upon the foundation laid by those who came before us a century ago. As elected officials, we are entrusted by the people to manage the affairs of the state, and to provide vision and leadership. Let us set aside any personal agenda and work to benefit the Utahns we serve.

Jon Huntsman: Designate I-15 from ID to AZ as natural gas corridor

Our goal will be to designate Interstate 15 from Idaho to Arizona as a natural gas corridor! It makes sense--working with Questar, a great local company--to encourage the use of natural gas which emits almost no pollution, is more affordable and most importantly, is a domestic fuel found right here in our own backyard.

This will require adding infrastructure, looking differently at our regulatory approach and demanding that we look beyond the here and now.

Jon Huntsman: Build the Legacy Parkway, and film industry

Our transportation progress is on the move. This year we will celebrate the opening of two major transportation corridors: commuter rail from Salt Lake to Pleasant View; and after years of Interstate-15 gridlock, Legacy Parkway will finally be a reality.

Utah is increasingly becoming a film destination spot, and (according to my daughters) we are really excited that soon Disney will begin filming High School Musical Three in our State. This is just one of dozens of movies being shot here.
