On Principles & Values: Character provides sense of direction & means to fulfillment

Whether on the floor of Congress, in the boardroom of corporate America, or in the corridors of a big city hospital, there is no body of professional expertise and no anthology of case studies that can supplant the force of character.

Character provides both a sense of direction and a means to fulfillment. It asks not what you want to be, but who you want to be. For in the final analysis, it is your moral compass that counts for more than any bank balance or resume.

On Welfare & Poverty: Red Cross volunteers taught me about hope amid suffering

When I was president of the Red Cross, my focus was inspiring people to volunteer, to give of their financial resources, and to donate their blood. My position gave me a unique vantage point from which to view the world at its very best and its very worst. I have seen the evil humans can inflict on one another in the dim eyes of starving children in Somalia and in the paralyzing grief of parents in Oklahoma City. I have seen the monstrous destruction unleashed by nature in the rubble of neighborhoods laid waste by Hurricane Andrew.

No one can undo such grievous and unearned pain. But Red Cross volunteers make it their mission to bring compassion and caring to disaster victims.

Red Cross volunteers taught me about the durability of human hope and faith amid suffering.
