On Principles & Values: Assassination attempt at annual charity baseball game

On June 14, 2017, I attended the final practice for Congress' annual charity baseball game. Representative Steve Scalise was playing second base. A few minutes past 7 a.m., as I left the field, a man walked up to us and asked whether the players on the field were Republicans or Democrats. "That is the Republican baseball team," we responded. For whatever reason, the man gave me a strange vibe. He certainly did not seem like he was a Republican.

On TV in the locker room, the chyron said that there had been a shooting at our Republican practice. The shooter fired 33 rounds, including one that struck Congressman Scalise. His goal was to massacre as many Republicans as possible; he came close to bringing about what would have been the largest assassination of members on Congress in U.S. history. The only reason he was not successful is because, as a member of leadership, Steve Scalise had a Capitol Police security detail assigned to him [who] engaged and eventually killed the shooter.
