Johnny Isakson in GA Senate Debate

On Homeland Security: Take the fight to the terrorists

ISAKSON: Securing the homeland means taking the fight to the terrorists where ever they area and we have done that in Iraq as we did in Afghanistan.

MAJETTE: How are we going to fund the continuation of the war on terrorism and how are we going to fund continuing to make our communities safe and right now we are in record deficits?

On Tax Reform: Move forward on meaningful reform in tax policy

MAJETTE: Majette criticized Isakson's support of a national sales tax. "Eighty percent of the people of Georgia would see an increase in their overall taxes if this plan goes into effect."

ISAKSON: I am one of these people that doesn't preclude any consideration from debate. I just want us to have the debate and move forward on meaningful reform in tax policy.

On Education: Voted for funding increases in No Child Left Behind

MAJETTE: Majette accused Isakson of not voting to fully fund No Child Left Behind and Headstart programs, which she said she fully supports.

ISAKSON: Isakson defended his voting record on education, saying he voted for funding increases in both programs.

On Health Care: Expand Medicare and create healthcare savings accounts

ISAKSON: Isakson focused on his plan to expand Medicare to more people and create healthcare savings accounts for workers who make tax-free contributions.

MAJETTE: Majette, who also voiced her support for Medicare and Medicaid programs, said she voted against the Medicare prescription drug bill because it "was set up by the drug companies" and accused Isakson of pandering to big corporations.

On War & Peace: Proud of my vote in favor of an $87 billion supplemental

ISAKSON: "Americans are sacrificing, and democracy is winning," Isakson said in the debate sponsored by WMAZ-TV in Macon and held at Reaves Arena on the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. Isakson said terrorism "is an evil we must destroy." "I'm proud of my vote, and I'm committed to the war on terror," Isakson said.

MAJETTE: Majette, however, accused Isakson of voting against providing $1,500 bonuses to soldiers and giving them tax breaks. "As the daughter of a World War II veteran and the niece of a veteran of Korea who never returned home, I will never allow someone to question my integrity, my belief in what we are doing, what our soldiers are doing," she said.
