On Energy & Oil: Led fight against federal fuel economy standards

Another blow fell on November 20 when Representative Henry Waxman of California unseated Michigan's beloved John Dingell, the longest sitting member in Congress, from his powerful chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Dingell had long championed the perceived interests of the automakers--for example, beating back efforts to increase federal fuel economy standards. It seemed as if Michigan were being stripped of all of its old defenses.
