January 6 Capitol Riot: on Civil Rights

Chris Christie: Trump fed the stolen election lie leading to insurrection

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he believes the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6 was the result of former President Donald Trump's lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

"I think everything that he was saying from Election Night forward incited people to that level of anger," Christie, a longtime friend and high-profile supporter of Trump, told CNN's Dana Bash. Asked by Bash if Trump was responsible for the insurrection, Christie said that while he doesn't believe any one single person can be responsible for the actions of others, he does believe rioters attacked the Capitol that day because they thought the election had been stolen--a lie that was fed by Trump. "I don't think they would've gone there if they thought the election had been fair," Christie said.

Christie's new book "Republican Rescue: Saving the Party From Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden" comes out this week.

Jody Hice: It was Trump supporters who lost their lives that day

A small but growing number of Republican lawmakers are propagating a false portrayal of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Georgia Rep. Jody Hice also painted the rioters as the victims, noting that they were four of the people who died , including Babbitt. The other three suffered medical emergencies while part of the crowd laying siege to the Capitol. "It was Trump supporters who lost their lives that day, not Trump supporters who were taking the lives of others," Hice said.

Josh Hawley: Raised fist in support of Jan. 6 rioters; blamed Pelosi

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)--who led the charge among Senate election objectors and raised a fist in solidarity with the crowd on the morning of the insurrection--has blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), suggesting falsely that she turned down requests for National Guard support before the insurrection.

Conservative leaders have adopted this strategy of deflection because it allows them to move on from Jan. 6 without ever having to truly acknowledge and reckon with what happened on Jan. 6. They also use it because it's good politics for them.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: Insurrection defendants are political prisoners of war

Greene described inmates being held at a Washington DC jail in connection with the January 6 Capitol riots as "political prisoners of war." The tweet follows her criticism of the conditions faced by those being charged over the insurrection at the US Capitol.

Last week, she said she had visited what she described as the "patriot wing" of the jail, tweeting that inmates had "virtually no medical care, very poor food quality, and being put through re-education," without giving further details. Greene wrote: "No one has argued in defense of the Capitol riot, and I've always openly said I was very upset by it, but after seeing these men myself in the DC Jail, I can attest this abuse is true."

"J6 defendants are political prisoners of war," she added. As well as her claims of prisoner abuse, Greene has defended those involved in the riot. Last month, she said that Jan. 6 "was just a riot. And if you think about what our Declaration of Independence says, it says to overthrow tyrants."

Ron DeSantis: Those who got violent need to be held accountable

He also said there are different level of responsibility among those who massed in Washington. "I think it was a really unfortunate thing. I think that a lot of the people that probably went to that speech were just going to do what they normally do. But those folks who took it to the violent level they need to be held accountable. It's just unacceptable to do that. It really, really a sad thing to see."
