January 6 Capitol Riot: on Crime

Adam Kinzinger: I knew there was going to be violence

I knew there was going to be violence. I didn't necessarily know they were going to sack the Capitol, but I knew there was going to be violence. In fact, I warned Kevin McCarthy two days prior to it. And he was very dismissive of it, of course. But I asked my staff to stay home. I came in, it was kind of a normal morning. I was watching Trump's speech and it was crazy, like usual. I remember seeing Jr. say, "This is now Trump's party." And I'm like, well that's creepy. And then Trump says, "I'm going to go with you to the Capitol." I'm like, "Man, this is bad." So I went down for the opening of the certification. And then I left, pretty much when the proceedings started, and then spent basically the next six hours in my office, hunkered down, with my gun out, prepared to defend against my own party.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Congressional lives were at risk; it can't be minimized

Ocasio-Cortez took to the House floor to condemn those who accused her of lying about her account of the Capitol siege. The congresswoman also issued a special order to allow her colleagues to share their own accounts of the deadly insurrection.

The move followed Ocasio-Cortez sharing her harrowing experience during the insurrection on Instagram Live, saying she thought she was "going to die."

"29 days ago, on January 6th, insurrectionists attacked our Capitol, seeking to overturn the results of our nation's election," Ocasio-Cortez said. "29 days ago, the glass in and around this very chamber was shattered by gunshots, clubs, by individuals seeking to restrain and murder members of congress duly elected to carry out the duties of their office."

"Sadly, less than 29 days later, with little to no accountability for the bloodshed and trauma of the 6th, some are already demanding that we move on, or worse, attempting to minimize, discredit, or belittle the account of survivors," she added.

Andrew Clyde: You would actually think it was a normal tourist visit

In the wake of Jan. 6 and in the lead-up to the 2022 midterms, a dangerous playbook is being deployed by the leaders of the MAGA-dominated Republican Party. Their message is clear: It's time to move on.

The playbook is a three-step dance. First, dismiss insurrections and white supremacists as a few bad apples on the fringe of the Republican Party.

As Rep. Andrew Clyde put it, "If you didn't know the TV footage was a video from January 6, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit."

Jamie Raskin: 14th Amendment might prevent Trump from holding office again

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment says anybody who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution, who violates and betrays that oath by participating in an insurrection or rebellion against the Union shall never be allowed to hold public office again. That was adopted by the Republicans after the Civil War, during the Reconstruction period. It was used then. And it may indeed depending on what we find Donald Trump did: [should his actions on Jan. 6] block him ever being able to run for office again.

We had 61 federal and state courts reject all of their claims of electoral corruption and fraud, and still they're out there propounding lies. That is a totalitarian tactic, and we have to call it for what it is and say, that's not going to work in American democracy in the 21st century. We have to defend our democrat institutions, against all enemies, foreign and Domestic, and again all those authoritarian governments abroad that are trying to destabilize American democratic culture.

Liz Cheney: Privilege claims suggest Trump personally involved

At the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot, Cheney said something very, very important about both Donald Trump and his former political svengali Steve Bannon:

"It appears that Mr. Bannon had substantial advance knowledge of the plans for Jan. 6 and likely had an important role in formulating those plans. Mr. Bannon was in the war room at the Willard on January 6. He also appears to have detailed knowledge regarding the president's efforts to sell millions of Americans the fraud that the election was stolen. Mr. Bannon's and Mr. Trump's privilege arguments do however appear to reveal one thing: They suggest that President Trump was personally involved in the planning and execution of January 6. And this committee will get to the bottom of that."

What Cheney is saying is that [invoking executive privilege] by Bannon and Trump are suggestions that both men did things in the run-up to the riot at the US Capitol (and on the day of the insurrection) they are trying to hide.
