John F. Kelly in Kamala's Way

On Immigration: Enforce deportation of DREAMers because it's the law

The Senate held a confirmation hearing in 2017 for retired Marine Corps General John F. Kelly. As head of the US Southern Command, Kelly oversaw all military operations in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean from November 2012 to January 2016. As Trump's nominee for the powerful post of Homeland Security Secretary, Kelly would run point on many issues of critical importance on the border state of California, and the nation.

[Senator Kamala] Harris asked, "Do you intend to use the limited law enforcement resources of DHS to remove DREAMers from the country?"

"I will follow the law," Kelly said. Kelly was suggesting without stating it directly, that he would oversee a policy that would lead to the deportation of DREAMers.

Senator Harris [later asserted that because of Kelly's stance on DREAMers], "I can't support his nomination for the Department of Homeland Security." Kelly was confirmed 88 to 11.
