MN Senate Primary Debate: on Tax Reform

Mark Kennedy: Make the positive effects of tax cuts permanent

Q: Do you believe in making all the tax cuts permanent?

A: I do believe the tax cuts we passed need to be made permanent, that they are having a positive effect on the economy, that we need to continue growing the economy. The tax relief we passed turned around the country, and that’s the path we need to continue on, not taking the risk of a huge tax increase.

Amy Klobuchar: Middle class tax cuts good; but current cuts are for rich

I’ve talked about rolling back tax cuts on the wealthy. People making over $1.3M per year -- their taxes have gone down 10 times that of the middle class. I’m talking about tax fairness. These tax cuts are going to the wealthiest, and [others] are getting screwed. It’s fine to talk about the middle class needing help and needing tax relief. But the [existing tax cuts] are for their friends who brought them to the dance.

Ford Bell: People should pay their fair share

Tax rates are very low by historical standards. During the 1950s, top marginal tax rates were 90%. I’m not talking about 90% tax rates, but I believe people should pay their fair share. It’s up to out leaders to show how their tax dollars have value -- help educate our children; help us develop cures for cancer; help us improve our transportation; help us be more secure.

Ford Bell: Tax-and-spend better than tax-and-borrow

Q: What if you’re called a tax-and-spend liberal?

A: It’s better to be a tax-and-spend liberal than a tax-and-borrow Republican.

Michael Cavlan: Make wealthy corporations in pay their fair share

There are some wealthy corporations in this country which are sucking the country dry. It’s time for them to pay their fair share.
