2008-2011 Mayoral State of the City addresses: on Drugs

Bill de Blasio: Sue Big Pharma for opioid addiction; open overdose centers

We're not afraid in this town to take on the big corporations. So we sued the big pharmaceutical companies for peddling addiction, for helping to create the opioid crisis.

We're going to fight to get the resources we deserve back from those companies, so we can help New Yorkers. But nonetheless, with the tools at hand today, we're stemming the tide of overdose deaths. We are opening overdose prevention centers anyway. Because there is no wrong way to save lives.

Cory Booker: Community courts for minor crimes like drug possession

Community courts zero in on low-level crime--offenses like vandalism, shoplifting, minor drug possession--and combine punishment and help. In the community court, instead of fines many people can't pay or short jail terms that do them no good, quality-of-life offenders will be sentenced to visible community service throughout the City and referred to drug treatment, job training, adult education, counseling and other services. Research suggests that this problem-solving approach to justice works: community courts in other cities have helped reduce crime while improving public trust and involvement in the justice system. I am so proud of the collaborative effort.

Mark Begich: Prevent youth from trying the deadly drug methamphetamine

While we know the long-term solution to youth violence is a safe and constructive environment, we’ve got zero tolerance for violence and gangs. Working together, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies have helped indict 39 hard-core criminals, resulting in total prison sentences of more than 180 years on gang, gun and drug charges.

Thanks to our congressional delegation, we recently received a nearly 400,000-dollar grant to continue our Tri-Borough initiative to prevent Alaska youth from ever trying the deadly drug--methamphetamine.

One of the anti-meth TV spots we produced through Porcaro Communications was recently recognized for a national Telly Award, selected from among 13,500 international entries.
