2008-2011 Mayoral State of the City addresses: on Energy & Oil

Bill de Blasio: Divest $5B from Big Oil; invest in renewable energy

We took on Big Oil. We're divesting $5 billion of our workers' hard-earned retirement savings, taking that $5 billion out of the fossil fuel companies that are destroying this planet. And we're putting billions where it belongs--into renewable energy that will save us all.

Annise Parker: We are the #1 municipal purchaser of renewable energy

Our new office of sustainability will have impacts long beyond my time in the mayor's office. Per the EPA's ranking, we are the #1 municipal purchaser of renewable energy. We are eighth in the nation in the number of LEED certified buildings, with a goal of being number one. The recent launch of our Green Office Challenge and Energy Efficiency Incentive Program, to help green our commercial building stock, will help get us there. If your companies are not participating in these programs, get on board.

Cory Booker: Weatherize of 450 homes; free for seniors

Our partnerships with La Casa de Don Pedro and First Hopewell have led to the weatherization of over 450 homes--helping residents save money with lower utility bills and creating jobs for Newarkers. We've partnered with Local 55 to train residents for jobs in weatherization, resulting in free home weatherization for dozens of our seniors. And we are moving forward with the sale of city-owned, abandoned homes to small, local contractors who will work with Local 55 to rehabilitate and weatherize them.
