Rick Lazio in The Associated Press

On War & Peace: Follow Israel’s lead on independent Palestine

Lazio repeatedly spoke yesterday about his support for moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, to recognize the city that Israel claims as its capital. He stayed away from more controversial topics, such as whether there should be an independent Palestinian state. “I am going to [follow] the lead of Israel on this,” Lazio said when asked about the topic. “I question whether or not a Palestinian state is sustainable, considering the security concerns of Israel.”

On Abortion: No funding for abortion; but don’t criminalize it

Lazio opposes late-term abortions (called partial-birth abortions by critics) and has voted against government funding for abortions for poor women on Medicaid, women in prison and women in the military. “I do not want to criminalize abortion,” Lazio said in an upstate campaign swing Monday. “On the other hand, I want to make it rarer and I don’t think just because we have a right, that we need to subsidize that right.”

On Gun Control: For Brady Bill & trigger locks; no fans at NRA

Lazio does not share Clinton’s unequivocal support for gun licensing or a hate-crimes law that would increase penalties for gay bias attacks. On gun control, Lazio is a strong enough proponent to have earned himself a “D-minus” from the National Rifle Association. He supports the Brady Bill, assault-weapons ban and trigger locks. But Lazio calls licensing “invasive” and says he hasn’t seen a registration program that’s “workable.”
