Stephen Laffey in The Associated Press

On Abortion: Roe v Wade is settled law; but restrictions ok

In some ways, Laffey is a social conservative. Unlike Chafee, he opposes abortion. But he says Roe v. Wade is settled law and abortion is a question for the courts. He supports placing restrictions, like parental notification, on abortion.

On Abortion: Undecided on stem cell research

Laffey said he wants to see more data before making up his mind on whether to support embryonic stem cell research, something critics see as destroying human life but supporters believe holds the promise of dramatic medical advances.

On Civil Rights: Supports civil unions and opposes Constitutional amendment

Like Chafee, Laffey opposes a proposed Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. He would make civil unions legal, while Chafee supports legalizing gay marriage.

On Energy & Oil: Drives an SUV & considers expanding mass transit unrealistic

Chafee advocates mass transit as a means to reduce gas consumption, but Laffey-who drives an SUV and recently bought a gas-guzzling RV to transport his wife and five children on the campaign trail-dismissed that as unrealistic. People will change their behavior when there’s an economic incentive to do so, Laffey said.

Laffey says, “People in America are used to being mobile. Jimmy Carter lost re-election by telling people to put on a sweater and lower the thermostat.”

On Energy & Oil: Economic incentives to reduce oil-funded Islamofacism

Laffey says that people will change their behavior when there’s an economic incentive to do so. Laffey said the administration needs a program to reduce use of foreign oil because money from those sales fuels what he calls “Islamofacism.” He would subsidize the production of solar and wind power and increase tax breaks for consumers who buy hybrids and install solar and other renewable energy systems in their homes.

On Immigration: Opposes granting illegal immigrants citizenship

On immigration, Laffey would not grant illegal immigrants citizenship. He wants the border with Mexico secured and a crackdown on employers who hire illegal workers. Once those two measures are in place, Laffey said he would support a guest worker program.
