Amy McGrath: 100% pro-choice; it is a woman's right to choose

McGrath has kept her distance from Emily's List, the financial engine that powers the campaigns of many Democratic pro-choice women. I thought that might suggest unorthodox Democratic views on abortion; I was wrong.

"I'm one-hundred percent pro-choice. I align with everything Emily's List aligns with," she told me. [But] "I don't want to be tied to a litmus test," McGrath said. "I don't want to be tied to any national interest like that, where people can say, you're just a puppet."

Bill Frist: Supports stem-cell research after initially opposing it

Frist angered conservatives when he reversed his earlier position and split from Bush by supporting expanded federal funding to study embryonic stem cells as potential treatments for disease. Bush and some Christian groups favor limiting the research, citing moral concerns because embryos must be destroyed to harvest the cells. Frist said the potential medical benefits outweighed those considerations.
