Bloomberg.com: on Energy & Oil

Rex Tillerson: Climate change real; with us now & forever more

It's rare for a current or former leader of one of the world's largest energy producers to testify under oath about climate change. "We knew, we knew it was a real issue," Tillerson said. "We knew it was a serious issue and we knew it was one that's going to be with us now, forever more, and it's not something that was just suddenly going to disappear off of our concern list because it is going to be with us for certainly well beyond my lifetime."

Rex Tillerson: Carbon tax best way to transition from fossil fuels

When he was CEO, Tillerson said the company had sought to promote the idea of a carbon tax to help ease society off fossil fuels. "We had watched the European emission-trading system evolve and, in fact, we were a participant in it because of our operations there," Tillerson said. " We looked at what are other alternative mechanisms to influence people's choices. And we felt a carbon tax was the most simplistic. It is transparent. You can't game a carbon tax."

Claudia Tenney: Applauded decision to leave the Paris climate agreement

Republican members of the bipartisan "Climate Solutions Caucus" scored an average of just 16 percent on scorecard released by League of Conservation Voters that tracks how lawmakers voted on major environmental issues last year. For example, Claudia Tenney has applauded Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate agreement, while staying silent on his moves to rescind the Clean Power Plan.

The Citizens' Climate Lobby, a grassroots group that played a role starting the Climate Solutions Caucus, says the league's environmental scorecard doesn't accurately reflect the caucus's efforts. "It's a little premature to be saying these Republicans are not doing anything at all," said a spokesman; "the Republican members of the caucus have achieved small victories, such as voting to require the Department of Defense to study the effects of global warming on its military bases. We think patience will eventually be rewarded with major legislation to address climate change."

Ben Carson: EPA must work with business; warming or cooling not relevant

There's always going to be either cooling or warming going on. As far as I'm concerned, that's irrelevant. What is relevant is that we have an obligation and a responsibility to protect our environment. Our Environmental Protection Agency should be told to work in conjunction with business, industry and universities to find the most eco-friendly ways of developing our energy resources.
