Cedric Richmond: Goal is connections regardless of political affiliation

The Biden administration plans to create a position to find common ground with conservatives, said Richmond. He said the office's goal was to forge connections with all Americans, regardless of their political affiliation. "We're not elected just to help Democrats or urban cities or minorities," he said. "We were elected to help this entire country and that means reaching out to conservatives, that means reaching out to rural areas, reaching out to people who didn't vote for us."

Rick Perry: Studied as veterinarian; organic chemistry made him a pilot

I went to a really small rural school, in Paint Creek--we had about 115 kids, grades 1 through 12. I like to tell people I graduated in the top 10 in my graduating class and then somebody always asks me how many and I have to 'fess up and say it was 13.

I always wanted to be a veterinarian, went off at Texas A&M, and about two years into that adventure, organic chemistry made a pilot out of me. I volunteered to join the United States Air Force and became a pilot and flew.

Alexi Giannoulias: Fallout from the April failure of his family's Broadway Bank

President Barack Obama sought to boost the prospects of the man seeking the U.S. Senate seat he once held. Democratic candidate Alexi Giannoulias is "not in it for the special interests, he's in it for your interest," Obama said at the Drake Hotel. "I hope you're fired up. I need it." Obama has placed his political capital and prestige on the line for the seat, in a race that offers a symbolic referendum on the president.

Mark Kirk, the Republican nominee, and Giannoulias have spent much of their campaign debating who is least trustworthy. Giannoulias has dealt with fallout from the April failure of his family's Broadway Bank, while Kirk was forced to apologize for exaggerating his biography.

Samuel Alito: Conflict-of-interest recusals only apply to“initial service”

Senate Democrats have asked why Alito ruled in cases involving Vanguard Group, where he holds mutual funds, and Smith Barney, his brokerage firm, though he pledged in 1990 to disqualify himself from matters involving those companies. Sen. Arlen Specter (R, PA) asked Alito to publicly respond to the questions.

“I have not ruled on a case for which I had a legal or ethical obligation to recuse myself during my 15 years on the federal bench,” Alito wrote to Specter. Alito said his 1990 judicial confirmation promise was intended to avoid conflicts during his “initial service” on the bench.

Later, he reassessed his position because he “realized that I had been unduly restrictive on my 1990 questionnaire because there was not a legal or ethical obligation to recuse myself from every case involving the companies I listed.”

Alito didn’t mention another explanation that he has previously given: that a “glitch” in a computer program designed to alert judges to conflicts failed to alert him.
