Joe Walsh: The "Age of Trump" woke him up to racism of past comments

I think we are all capable of being racist at times, even if not purposely. I am not a racist, but certainly I've said some racist things. All I can do is apologize for them. I despise political correctness. At times, I've been ignorant to how things I've said could inadvertently create an opening for others to use my words to further a racist agenda. I never want things I'm saying to cause hurt of pain to people. The age of Trump certainly has woken me up to that.

Sally Yates: Change doesn't happen with people sitting on their behinds

If there's any message, whether it's for my kid who's this one, who's too young to vote, or those that are able to vote, you gotta be part of this. You can't sit on the sidelines and read your iPhone and be on social media and expect everything to be cool. You have to be part of this. You have to make change. Change doesn't happen with people sitting on their behinds, getting lazy. And I think that's a very important lesson to come out of this election.

Xavier Becerra: We know true value of diversity; will fight for our beliefs

In a conference call with reporters, Becerra seemed open to sparring over ideology with a Trump administration if needed. "We are a state that knows who it is, what it's good at, and we're going to continue to do that," Becerra said. "We know the true value of diversity, and we're going to fight for what we believe in."

Catherine Cortez Masto: Offensive to criticize Mexican-American for no Spanish

Cortez Masto said it was "offensive" to suggest she isn't Mexican enough because she doesn't speak Spanish. Cortez Masto was responding to her opponent's former political director, who is also Mexican-American and who asked in a tweet: "quick question does @CatherineForNV speak Spanish?"

"I think its absolutely ridiculous--if that was the litmus test for whether or not you're Mexican-American then Gov. Sandoval would be thrown into that," she said.

Evan McMullin: Attended Brigham Young U; will contest Trump in Utah

McMullin has been a vocal critic of Trump on social media. On the night of Trump's speech at the Republican National Convention, he tweeted that Trump was an "authoritarian" who was seeking to infringe on civil rights.

Apart from his low profile, his candidacy will face other substantial hurdles in gaining traction--especially with ballot access and fundraising. But people close to the effort suggested McMullin would have the backing of serious Republican donors and fundraisers. They also pointed to his ties to Utah, a state where polls show Trump badly underperforming with the Mormon-heavy electorate. McMullin, an alum of Brigham Young University, plans to aggressively contest the state.

Evan McMullin: Received MBA from Wharton in 2011; unmarried

Young and unmarried, McMullin received an MBA at Wharton in 2011, and after a stint at Goldman Sachs, went to work as a policy wonk on Capitol Hill.

Unlike National Review writer David French, another conservative courted by anti-Trump Republicans to launch a long-shot third-party bid, McMullin has virtually no public profile. He doesn't appear regularly on television, and has just 135 followers on Twitter.

Andrew Cuomo: OpEd: Primary challenge doubles the campaign donation limit

Though Zephyr Teachout's campaign can prove disruptive to Cuomo's early election season, it has one silver lining for the incumbent. Without a primary challenger, Cuomo would have to return a percentage of donations he received. With Teachout's entry, Cuomo will be able to accept maximum donations for both the primary and general election cycles

Jeb Bush: GOP isn't about orthodoxy & disallowing disagreement

I asked Jeb there about the Republican Party. "Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, as would my dad--they would have a hard time if you define the Republican Party--and I don't--as having an orthodoxy that doesn't allow for disagreement, doesn't allow for finding some common ground," Bush said, adding that he views the hyper-partisan moment as "temporary."

"Back to my dad's time and Ronald Reagan's time--they got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan support," he said. Reagan "would be criticized for doing the things that he did."

In the 12 years(!) since he last ran for office, Bush missed the rise of the tea party, and the ascendancy of a new generation of politicians--Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, among them. Those men occasionally, carefully, respectfully break with the movement. Scorning today's Republican Party is, by contrast, the core of Jeb's political identity.

Paul Ryan: Tea Party & libertarians bring "creative tension" to GOP

In his CPAC speech, Ryan celebrates the "messy and noisy" debate currently consuming the Republican Party, and cast the infighting as a necessary step to shape a fresh conservative agenda for the country: "The way the Left tells it, the Republican Party is in a civil war," Ryan says. "It's Tea Party versus establishment--libertarians versus social conservatives."

He compares today's intra-party squabbling to the beginning of the Reagan revolution, when a "battle of ideas" gave way to a long period of conservative dominance in American politics: "We're figuring out the best way to apply our principles to the challenges of the day," Ryan says. "Sure, we have our disagreements. And yes, they can get a little passionate. I like to think of it as 'creative tension.' That's how it always is: You fight it out. You figure out what works. You come together. Then you win. It's messy and noisy and even a little bit uncomfortable. But the center of gravity is shifting. We're developing an agenda."

Rick Santorum: Obama's worldview: secular socialistic culture like Europe

Santorum was calling Obama a socialist before it was cool. He launched what's now become a signature attack in an August 2008 speech to the Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life: Calling President Obama a socialist. Santorum attacked the then Senator Obama on numerous fronts, accusing Obama of wanting a "more secular, government-driven, top-down, elitist culture," similar to that of Western Europe. Noting Obama's speech in Berlin, Santorum said this:

"It was just such an affirmation of this belief to see Barack Obama in Germany. He is the party of Europe. They love him over there. Why? Because it is a very secular world. It's a very secular culture. It's a socialistic culture. It is exactly what Barack Obama wants to see America. It's exactly what Howard Dean envisions for America. If you look at everything they do, they point to the journey of Western Europe as the journey they want to replicate here in America."
