The Los Angeles Times: on Crime

Ayn Rand: Crime involves force; no such thing as crime against society

All actions defined as criminal in a free society are actions involving force--and only such actions are answered by force.

Do not be misled by sloppy expressions such as "A murderer commits a crime against society." It is not society that a murderer murders, but an individual man. It is not a social right that he breaks, but an individual right. He is not punished for hurting a collective--he has not hurt a whole collective--he has hurt one man. If a criminal robs ten men--it is still not "society" that he has robbed, but ten individuals. There are no "crimes against society"--all crimes are committed against specific men, against individuals. And it is precisely the duty of a proper social system and of a proper government to protect an individual against criminal attack--against force.

Ezola Foster: Foster claims she was gang target in her Los Angeles home

In response to questions about the defaulted mortgage on her 1993 Los Angeles duplex, Foster said, "we didn't realize that it was in a gang-infested area. when we were taken there, you couldn't tell." She said gangs targetted her because of her prominence in the media. "With my speaking out against gang activity it was very unsafe for us. we had to get out of there quickly."

Tom Steyer: Regrets Farallon's $34M investment in corporate prisons

A key liability [in Steyer's portfolio history] is Farallon's 2005 investment of $34 million in Corrections Corp. of America (CCA), which runs migrant detention centers on the US-Mexico border for ICE. Many of the roughly two dozen Democrats in the presidential race have denounced profits from incarceration as immoral. "I deeply regret that Farallon made that investment, and I personally ordered the investment in CCA to be sold because it did not accord with my values then or now," Steyer said.

Kamala Harris: Fulfill Proposition 69: fast analysis of all DNA samples

The California Department of Justice will be able to analyze routine DNA evidence in only 30 days, up to four times faster than before, Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris announced. "Crime scene evidence is too important to sit unanalyzed for months, while the victims await justice," Harris said.

Officials whittled down the backlog by shifting cases among the state's seven crime labs that handle DNA testing. In addition, robotics helped reduce part of the process for analyzing sexual assault evidence from two days to two hours. Last year the labs analyzed 5,400 evidence samples, up from 4,800 in 2010 and 4,100 in 2009, according to the department.

The state's crime labs came under increasing pressure in January 2009, when Proposition 69 began requiring authorities to collect DNA samples from any adult arrested for a felony. But Jill Spriggs, who oversees the state forensic system, said that backlog is also gone. "That's been eliminated for almost a year now," she said.
