$1.2 billion to save the jobs of 16,500 California teachers
Much of the debate focused on the economy and illustrated the clear choice for voters between Boxer's call for greater government intervention and Fiorina's advocacy of a bevy of tax cuts that she said would give businesses more freedom to hire and
expand.Boxer accused Fiorina of opposing every recent job-creation effort in the Senate, including an education bill that provided California with $1.2 billion to save the jobs of 16,500 teachers, and a bill that would increase access to credit and
extended tax breaks for small businesses. "Every time you really get past the surface, you see my opponent fighting for billionaires, for millionaires, for companies that shipped jobs overseas," Boxer said.
Fiorina said that the key to economic
recovery was less government, taxation and regulation. "To create jobs, we need to make sure in particular our small businesses are freed from strangling regulation and freed from taxation," Fiorina said.

George W. Bush:
"Silver Scholarships" for kids from seniors who volunteer
Under Bush's "silver scholarship" program, senior citizens could volunteer as tutors in after-school programs in exchange for $1,000 educational scholarships. Seniors who volunteer at least 500 hours a year would be eligible for the scholarships, which
they then could pass on to their children, grandchildren or other children in need. Bush said, "Today's elderly are the best-educated generation of seniors in history," and many are eager to help. The pilot project would be limited to 10,000 volunteers.

$1.3B to help students in college-prep math & science
Bush proposed a $1 billion fund to pair states with universities in an effort to strengthen math & science education, and a $1,000 increase in individual Pell Grants to encourage high school students to take advanced college preparation courses in both
subjects. "There's no reason for us to be next to last in the world in math. There's no reason for us to be last in physics," Bush said. He'd offer $345 million in added incentives for math & science majors to teach in schools with low-income students.

Jerry Brown:
No government-imposed standards for public schools
Brown blasted the notion of government-imposed standards for public schools, saying he opposed efforts from Washington and Sacramento to dictate education policy. Using "data on a national or state level I think misses the point--that learning is very
individual, very personal," Brown said. "It comes back to the teacher and the principal. The leader of the school is by far the most important factor."When asked if he supported national education standards, Brown said, "No. That's just a form of
national control." Brown reprised a story he tells frequently about an exam he had in high school when a teacher asked students to write their impressions of a green leaf. "Still, as I walk by trees, I keep saying, 'Can I feel anything?
Am I dead inside?' So, this was a very powerful question that has haunted me for 50 years." The point, Brown said, is that "you can't put that on a standardized test. There are important educational encounters that can't be captured by tests."

John Kasich:
Tax money for entrepreneurial private schools
Kasich wants "total school choice," which would allow states to organize schools as they wish, even using tax money to send children to private schools. A free-market enthusiast, he envisions entrepreneurs with "minimal qualifications" setting up new
schools and competing for students. He has little patience for concerns that some of the neediest children could be left behind: "I don't know what will come, but I know what we have ain't working."

Joseph Lieberman:
Lieberman's view on vouchers closer to Bush's than Gore's?
Bush's campaign overstated the case when it asserted in a statement Monday that Gore "has chosen a man whose positions are more similar to Gov. Bush's than his own."
But Lieberman does echo Bush in supporting private-school vouchers for low-income parents whose children are stuck in poorly performing schools. (Gore staunchly opposes the idea.)
