CNN political race coverage: on Gun Control

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Close the gun show loophole

Schwarzenegger supports the Brady Bill, which tightened gun control measures. “I would also like to close the loophole of the gun shows,” Schwarzenegger said, referring to the fact that people can buy weapons at such exhibitions without a background check.

Bill Bradley: Ban inexpensive “junk” handguns

Bradley called for a ban on “junk” handguns, the inexpensive, cheaply made weapons most often linked to crime. “These can explode in a user’s hand,” Bradley said. “They are dangerous.” The stance seemed a slight retreat from reports last month that Bradley was considering pushing a ban on the sale of all handguns. His aides say the ban on all handgun sales is a long-range goal. Bradley said he would support a ban on both the possession and sale of junk guns, also known as Saturday night specials.

Bill Bradley: Register guns; limit buyers to one per month

Bradley’s agenda on guns includes a one-per-month limit on handgun purchases, banning anyone convicted of domestic violence from owning a gun, restricting firearms dealers to commercial areas, bumping up the cost of licenses for gun dealers, requiring a registration process for handguns similar to auto registration, and requiring background checks on buyers at gun shows.

Dick Cheney: Voted against banning plastic bullets & cop-killer bullets

Cheney opposes gun control limits. He was one of just 21 members of Congress, in December of 1985, to vote against a ban on armor piercing bullets -- called cop killer bullets. Three years later he was one of only four members of the House voting against a ban on plastic guns that could slip through airport security machines undetected. The National Rifle Association did not oppose this ban. Also in 1988, Cheney voted to scrap a proposed national seven-day waiting period on handgun purchases.

Gary Bauer: New gun laws won't prevent Littleton

Eighteen gun laws were violated that day in Littleton, Colorado. I don't think anyone believes a 19th or 20th is going to stop the tragedies that we are seeing.

George W. Bush: Gun show checks OK; ban guns near schools & kids

An aide to Bush said the governor has "consistently supported since 1994 the idea of instant background checks at gun shows to make sure the people we don't want to sell guns to are not buying guns." The aide noted that Bush previously signed legislation prohibiting anyone from carrying a weapon within 300 yards of a school, and holding adults criminally liable if they allow a juvenile access to a loaded gun.

Hillary Clinton: License and register all handgun sales

Hillary Rodham Clinton offered her support for a legislative proposal to license hand guns. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer, would require anyone who wants to purchase a gun to obtain a state-issued photo gun license. "I stand in support of this common sense legislation to license everyone who wishes to purchase a gun," Clinton said. "I also believe that every new handgun sale or transfer should be registered in a national registry, such as Chuck is proposing."

Jeb Bush: Reduce gun violence and protect 2nd Amendment

Florida is a pro-gun state. Gun violence has dropped. There's a reason for it. We created a balance that's focused on lowering gun violence but protecting the Second Amendment, and it's a model for many other countries and many other states because of that. These cases of people who are just mentally deranged--we as a society better figure out how we identify these folks long before they feel compelled to take up a gun and kill innocent people.

Jesse Ventura: It's up to gun owners to ensure their weapons aren't misused

As a gun owner, it's up to you to make sure that these weapons can't get into the hands of children. That's why you have a gun safe. That's why, if you so choose, buy gun locks and put those on. With freedom we have to accept responsibility, and you certainly don't want to lose your freedoms. But again, you must accept responsibility in which to hold those freedoms.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: Confronted Parkland shooting survivor on radical gun control

Video of Greene confronting Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg went viral amid an uproar over newly reported comments she made in 2018 and 2019. "He's a coward," Greene says at the end of the video as Hogg walks away, claiming his activism was funded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros. Greene said in a written statement that the video was taken while she was in Washington, "going from office to office in the Senate to oppose the radical gun control agenda that David Hogg was pushing."

Steve Bullock: Background checks & age restrictions to reduce gun violence

On gun control: "You know, I would," Bullock told CNN when asked if he would support a ban on semiautomatic weapons. "There are things that we can do immediately, everything from red flag laws to closing, sort of having a universal background check, to making sure that we're doing everything we can, some age restrictions, magazine restrictions."

Tom Price: Gun ownership protects those at scene of crime

Price asserted that when violence has taken place, gun ownership has protected--not harmed--those at the scene of the crime. "In fact, guns are used more often to protect lives, not take lives. Steps to remove firearms from the hands of law-abiding citizens endanger those very citizens," he said.

Tom Steyer: Targets youth voter registration for pro gun control votes

In the wake of the Parkland school shooting, a billionaire Democratic donor is pledging $1 million to help young people register to vote with the hope that they will help elect pro-gun control politicians in the midterm elections. "Over the last week, we've all had a chance to hear the powerful, thoughtful, important appeals from the Floridian high school students about the need for meaningful gun control," Tom Steyer says in a video posted to Twitter Thursday.

Tom Vilsack: Start conversation with a respect for the 2nd Amendment

Here's how I view this. I view this conversation starting with a respect for the 2nd Amendment and a recognition that there is a value system attached to it that is important, and it starts with the recognition that people do hunt and that that's important to them--38% of America either hunts or fishes. So you know, it's a big part of the population. It's a much deeper conversation.

And it's a good one to have for this country. It's potentially a unifying conversation. The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation and Lord knows we need to be unified.
