Patrick Murphy: More background checks: close the terrorist gun loophole

Murphy wants tougher gun laws that he says might prevent episodes like the one that saw 49 people killed during the Pulse nightclub tragedy in June. Murphy is challenging Sen. Marco Rubio for his seat--and challenged him to support tougher gun control legislation.

"We need somebody who is actually going to show up to work, who acts in the best interest of their community, of their constituents, not some lobby," Murphy said. "Every vote Senator Rubio has taken has proven he is not that senator. I'm calling on Senator Rubio to embrace reason in order to keep us safe from gun violence."

Murphy says he supports legislation that would close the terrorist gun loophole, demand more thorough background checks on those wanting to purchase guns. He also supports banning the sale of assault weapons such as the one Omar Mateen used to gun down more 100 people at Pulse nightclub.

Rubio voted against a measure that would have prevented those on the terror watch list from buying weapons.

Jeanne Shaheen: Semi-automatic rifles are weapons of war

Shaheen charged that people who buy the wildly popular AR-15 semi-automatic rifle are buying it "to do bad things."

"I think people need to have their voices heard, and what I've heard from people in New Hampshire is that they think there's reasonable legislation that we can pass including things like looking at the types of weapons that are so easy for people to get," the Democrat said. "The fact is, the AR-15, that's a weapon of war," Ms. Shaheen said.

Allyson Schwartz: Restrictions on both assault weapons and handguns

All four candidates would sign legislation to enact universal background checks, ban sales of assault weapons, require that gun owners report lost or stolen guns and grant municipalities the ability to enact gun control ordinances. McCord and Schwartz would sign legislation to limit the number of handguns that one person could buy in an effort to deter straw purchases. McGinty would not sign legislation to limit handgun purchases. Wolf wouldn't say whether he would sign that legislation.

John Kerry: Supports 2nd Amendment, but wants to ban assault weapons

Let me be clear. I support the Second Amendment. I am a gun owner. I am a hunter. {Kerry justified the ban because no hunter uses assault weapons.} George Bush chose to make the job of terrorists easier, and the job of police officers harder.
