The Washington Times: on Immigration

Jane Timken: AdWatch: Opposes amnesty to 12 million illegal immigrants

A GOP Senate candidate in Ohio released a campaign ad attacking President Biden's approach to the southern border, accusing him of caring more about illegal immigrants than struggling Americans.

Jane Timken is vowing to "be tough on illegal immigration."

"During the pandemic, Ohio's small businesses and families struggled to survive," Ms. Timken says in the ad. "What was Joe Biden's first legislative proposal--a liberal plan to give amnesty to 12 million illegal immigrants."

Bob Casey: Support sanctuary cities like Philadelphia

Republican opponent Lou Barletta has been campaigning against Mr. Casey's support for sanctuary cities such as Philadelphia. At the campaign rally for Barletta, Mr. Trump told voters that Mr. Casey is for "open borders" and has opposed every one of his proposals to toughen immigration policy and border security

Allan Fung: Federal authorities notified on illegal immigrants releases

Mayor Fung is promising to notify the federal government when immigrants in the country illegally are detained by police in his city, unlike other mayors. Fung said he signed an agreement this week as a way to ensure that criminals in the country illegally cannot continue to commit crimes in Cranston. The federal government is requiring cities receiving public safety grants to notify federal agents when immigrants in the country illegally are being released from police detention.

Ralph Northam: Support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam's pledge this week to support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants has thrust the issue of immigration to the forefront of the state's 2017 gubernatorial race.

Republican Corey Stewart slammed Northam's stance as "blatant disregard for the law." Ed Gillespie said, "Virginia plain and simply should not give legal identification to illegal immigrants."

The issue surfaced when Northam was asked where he stood on a proposal to grant temporary driver's licenses to people who can't receive a permanent one because of their immigration status. "We need to make sure that we have immigration reform for this county, we make sure that we have a pathway to citizenship in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we need to make sure that people have access to driver's licenses," he said. A total of 12 states allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, according to a breakdown of state laws from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Donald Trump: Citizenship for illegal immigrants is a GOP suicide mission

Donald Trump said the Republican party will lose elections if it reforms the nation's entitlement programs and will hand Democrats 11 million votes if Congress grants citizenship to illegal immigrants, likening the reform efforts to a "suicide mission." "The fact is 11 million people will be voting Democratic. You can be out front. You can be the spearhead. You can do whatever you want to do, but every one of those 11 million people will be voting Democratic," he said. "It is just the way it works."

"You have to be very, very careful, because you could say that to a certain extent the odds aren't looking so great for Republicans, that you are on a suicide mission," he said. "You are just not going to get those votes."

Rob Sobhani: Make English the official language of the United States

The first step the author proposes to address the immigration morass is to make English the official language of the United States, a standard that already is imposed by 31 state governments. He makes a convincing case that programs that promote English as a second-language among immigrants and in the public schools act as a barrier to acquiring both higher education and better-paying jobs.

Sobhani proposes coupling the official adoption of English with an aggressive program of structured English immersion that would prepare the individual to move on into the general classroom and job market. He also would force reversal of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission policy targeting small businesses that insist their employees be proficient in English.

Rob Sobhani: 5-year moratorium on immigration & 75,000 work visas

The author recommends a five-year moratorium on immigration. This would not be an outright ban on all immigration. Spouses of US citizens, people of extraordinary ability and humanitarian cases would be allowed in. But the estimated 75,000 work visas currently issued every month would be held to a bare minimum as long as unemployment was above 5%.

In addition, the current rules would be ended that allow the added immigration of extended relatives. Spouses and children would be allowed in but not siblings, parents or even adult children. Amnesty permits for illegals also could be ended.

Related to the moratorium is the proposal to end the current government permissiveness that allows the chain immigration of groups of even distant relatives of a single person under the rubric of family reunification. It is these extended family members who are most likely to need access to public welfare, while few of them have the skills--or even the desire--to work.
