The Washington Times: on Principles & Values

Tiffany Smiley: Will do anything for this country: keep American Dream alive

The candidate said she also wants to help promote policies that restore the American Dream and enhance economic opportunities that have become eroded. "We'll do anything for this country, to fight for it, and to ensure that the American Dream is alive and well for our children for generations to come," Mrs. Smiley said. "That's truly why I'm in this fight."

Jessica Taylor: Flames of liberty make our country a shining city on a hill

Liberals are in a relentless pursuit of power, and they will not rest until they have snuffed out the flames of liberty that make our country a shining city on a hill. That's why I'm running - to fight at full-throttle for our conservative values. As Senator, I won't just launch Kamala Harris' liberal agenda into outer space-I'll fight to fire it out of this solar system. Let's get it done.

Bob Casey: Dubbed "Sleeping Bob" for anti-Trump obstructionism

Republican Lou Barletta isn't shying away from his bond with Mr. Trump, who campaigned for him in northeastern Pennsylvania this month. He is criticizing Mr. Casey as an obstructionist, pointing to the incumbent's pledge to block Mr. Trump's Supreme Court nominee before the president even announced his choice of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh.

At the campaign rally this month, Mr. Trump told voters that Mr. Casey has opposed every one of his proposals to toughen immigration policy and border security.

He also came up with a nickname for the low-key Mr. Casey. "Sleeping Bob," Mr. Trump announced to the crowd. "That's it--Sleeping Bob. "I hear that Bob Casey is afraid to debate Lou Barletta," Mr. Trump told the crowd. "Is the president of the United States allowed to come into the debate forum? Is he allowed to sit in the front row watching Lou Barletta destroy Bob Casey? That will be great entertainment." He called Mr. Barletta "a star."

Cindy Hyde-Smith, state commissioner of agriculture and commerce, was appointed by the governor to fill in for the rest of the year the seat vacated by Sen. Cochran. "I pledge to serve with honor and respect. I want to thank Senator Cochran for his leadership, dedication and service to our state. I'm also looking forward to working with President Trump and everyone else who believes in the policies and principles that are making America great again," she said at a press conference.

John Gregg: Calls himself a "gun-totin' Bible-quotin' Democrat"

Describing himself as a "gun-totin,' Bible-quotin,' Southern Indiana Democrat," Mr. Gregg had a long career in the Indiana House of Representatives, where he served from 1987 to 2003. He was speaker of the House from 1996 to the end of his tenure.

Donald Trump: Keep the word 'Christmas' in the holiday

Donald Trump said that as president he would fight in court for greater freedom of religious expression because America is trying to sanitize Christianity from the public square: "A week doesn't go by where there's not some negative ruling on something having to do with Christianity," Trump said. "I'll be fighting on the other side much stronger than anybody else that you have up there fighting, because I think it's really outrageous."

Asked whether the Gospels would inform his public-policy choices in the White House, Trump said "deep down, maybe they do" influence his decision-making. For example, Trump said, he is offended that "the word Christmas is being taken out" of the holiday. "I see these stores like Macy's and so many others-- they're afraid to use the word 'Christmas' now," Trump said. "Maybe they can't use it, legally. What's going on is outrageous, and I will do things about it. The beliefs in the Bible had a lot to do with our country."

Peter Shumlin: Retiring after three terms to return to the business world

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says he won't run for a fourth, two-year term next year. Shumlin announced his plans at a news conference where he outlined the successes of his administration and identified challenges still to come. The Democrat had survived a tough re-election fight in November, outspending little-known business owner Scott Milne but still drawing less than 50% of the vote and forcing the Legislature to decide the outcome in January.

Shumlin also had to abandon one of his signature efforts: a universal, government-backed health care system often referred to as single-payer. The 59-year-old Shumlin, who was first elected in 2010, said he never had any desire to be a full-time politician. He said he'll return to the business world.

Maria Cantwell: Voted for Kerry in 2004; he matched Northwest values

Q: In 2004 ,who got your vote for President, and why?

CANTWELL: I voted for John Kerry. He matched our Northwest values. He won Washington state because he understood our values and would fight for them.

McGAVICK: I voted for George Bush because he understood that the single most important issue facing America was the war to defeat radical Islamic terrorism. I also thought it was more likely, given Bush’s record, that he would do more to reduce the debt than John Kerry.

GUTHRIE: The American people could see that the choices we had were terrible. Only 40% of registered voters voted-60% were not served, and were disgusted with the Democrats & Republicans. I voted for change. I voted for Michael Badnarik, who represented a new sensible center in politics, without the extremes of the Democrats & Republicans. My vote represented the values of America; we’re socially tolerant yet fiscally responsible. My vote counted because I didn’t fall into the trap of voting for the lesser of two evils.

Condoleezza Rice: Faith & prayer guide me on difficult matters

My faith isn’t something that I can set outside of anything that I do, because it’s so integral to who I am. Prayer is very important to me and a belief that if you ask for it, you will be guided. Now, that doesn’t mean that I think that God will tell me what to do on, you know, the Iran nuclear problem. But I do believe very strongly that if you are a prayerful and faithful person, that that is a help in guiding us, as imperfect beings, to have to deal with extremely difficult and consequential matters.

Barack Obama: Ryan quits Senate race amid sex scandal allegations

Jack Ryan withdrew from the Illinois Senate race days after sex club allegations in his divorce papers torpedoed his campaign. Ryan issued this statement by e-mail:
It is clear a vigorous debate on the issues could not take place if I remain in the race. What would take place rather is a brutal scorched-earth campaign, the kind of campaign that has turned off so many voters, the kind of politics I refuse to play.
Illinois Republican Party leaders were to meet to choose a replacement candidate within a week [to oppose Democrat Barack Obama]. Ryan decided to quit when polls taken after his custody documents were released showed he had a slim chance of winning. The Illinois US congressional delegation unanimously decided Ryan should be replaced. Ryan’s fate was sealed after a secret conference call among party leaders. Ryan was accused by his then-wife, television actress Jeri Ryan, of taking her to explicit sex clubs in the 1990s and pressuring her to perform sex acts in public.

Howard Dean: A committed follower of Jesus Christ

Dean, who had said little about the role of religion in politics, yesterday said he is a committed follower of Jesus Christ. Dean said he will start mentioning God and Christ as the campaign moves into the South.

Dean, who is a member of the Congregationalist Church, said he does not attend church often, but prays daily. His wife is Jewish, and their two children adopted the Jewish faith. Jesus is an important influence in his life, he said, and has served as a “model” for him. “Christ was someone who sought out people who were disenfranchised, people who were left behind,“ he said. ”He fought against self-righteousness of people who had everything. He was a person who set an extraordinary example that has lasted 2,000 years.“

Dean said [as a child], ”we didn’t have Bible readings. There are traditions where people do that. We didn’t. People in the Northeast don’t talk about their religion. It’s a very personal, private matter, and that’s the tradition I was brought up in.“

Ezola Foster: Foster denies reports of divorce filing

Court records show that Foster filed for divorce from her husband Charles in 1983; but in an interview Foster laughed off the notion that she had wanted to divorce. “We’ve never had that kind of problem”, she said. “I have had some bad advice given to me legally in the past”, she said. “Maybe that was part of it.”
