Ayanna Pressley: Support progressive legislation with activist leadership

While Pressley and [incumbent opponent Mike] Capuano did not disagree on much substantive policy--the Democratic congressman from Massachusetts is one of the House's most staunch progressives--she characterized herself as someone who would be more of an activist leader, extending her work on behalf of the district beyond just supporting liberal legislation. "There's the vote on the floor of Congress, but then there's the work and the impact here," Pressley told The Daily Beast in July.

Carly Fiorina: Started "Unlock Your Potential PAC" in 2014

A prime speaking slot, a straw poll spot, a new super PAC--the former HP CEO is set to make a big splash at the GOP confab, and, if everything goes right, take on Hillary Clinton. The annual presidential audition known as the Conservative Political Action Conference has long been a place where a candidate can go from "who?" to "oh, right, that person." And if all goes according to plan, "that person" at the 2015 event will be likely Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina. She's also the chair of the American Conservative Union Foundation, the group that puts on CPAC every year.

Fiorina started Unlock Your Potential PAC in 2014 to help the GOP better appeal to women voters. The group spent $512,394 in Senate races last cycle. She'll no doubt be discussing this effort on a CPAC panel called "Lies Told to You by Liberals" and "Countering the 'War on Women' Lie."

Deval Patrick: I never left my conscience at the company door

Patrick retorted that "progressives are sometimes uncomfortable in principle with people who work for companies," adding that he had "never left my conscience at the door." But there's no evidence that he raised any objection to Ameriquest's actions when he was inside the door. After then-President Bush appointed Ameriquest's principal owner, Ronald Arnall, ambassador to the Netherlands in 2005, Patrick wrote to leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urging he be confirmed.

Howard Schultz: Vast majority of Americans aren't going to embrace socialism

[Responding to a question about the Green New Deal, Schultz said], "The vast majority of Americans are not going to embrace socialism," neglecting to note that just one of the many people running for president on the Democratic side identifies as a Democratic Socialist. The first real groans of the morning came when Schultz answered the question, "Can you define socialism?" by pointing to Venezuela. "You don't like that?" he asked.

Schultz's spokesperson responded to this article by saying, "You seemed to have completely misinterpreted the response from the crowd about socialism. It wasn't that they didn't agree with him. They were groaning about the idea of socialism. If you had any read of the crowd whatsoever, you would have noticed that. And, by the way, he has been defining capitalism at events over the last 24 hours. It is not as if he doesn't have an answer."

Lincoln Chafee: Voted for Bush41 in 2004 as protest against Bush43

Those who know Chafee call him "Linc" for short. The last of a dying breed of liberal Republicans, he earned the distinction of being the only GOP senator to vote against the war in Iraq. He placed a symbolic vote for George H.W. Bush for president in 2004, as a means of expressing his disapproval of W. Later, in his time as Rhode Island governor during the Great Recession, he earned the nicknames "Governor Gump" and "Governor Grinch," the latter after a fight over what to call Christmas trees.

Mark Sanford: Trump's payoff to porn star "deeply troubling"

Rep. Mark Sanford was one of the few Republican lawmakers to address Trump's alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, calling the situation "deeply troubling." Sanford, who admitted to having an extramarital affair in 2009, suggested that there would be "hearings" into the matter if it happened under a Democratic president. "What you can't do is be completely silent on something that is troubling," Sanford said.

Richard Carmona: 1999: shot and mortally wounded a deranged murderer

One fall day in 1999, on a busy street in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Richard Carmona shot and mortally wounded Jean Lafitte, a mentally disturbed man who had just stabbed his own father to death.

Carmona, a Tucson trauma M.D., had been on his way to a football game when he stopped to deliver first aid at what appeared to be a traffic accident. When he got closer to the scene, bystanders told him Lafitte was armed. Carmona returned to his car, retrieved his Pima County Sheriff Deputy badge and gun, identified himself repeatedly and warned Lafitte to drop his weapon, news accounts say. Instead, the gunman blasted away at Carmona--one bullet grazed Carmona's head. Carmona returned fire, mortally wounding Lafitte. Next, he triaged the wounded man. And later, he was credited with saving the lives of bystanders and Lafitte's girlfriend, whom Lafitte was going to kill next.

Richard Carmona: Classified as disabled veteran from Vietnam wounds

The former U.S. surgeon general downplays the wounds he sustained as a Special Forces medic in Vietnam. (He still wears his medic medal; it dangles from a gold neck chain.) "I am classified as a disabled veteran," he told The Daily Beast recently. "The reason I'm disabled is because I have wounds and injuries that I got while on active duty--from parachute jumping to combat to gunshot wounds, all that stuff," he said. "I've gotten shot in the head. These injuries are almost all impact & trauma & blast injuries. When you put your body through all of this stuff over 35 or 40 years in the military or police you pay the price, that's all."

In 1992, he rappeled from a helicopter to deliver medical help to victims of a helicopter crash in the snowy Arizona mountains. Carting an injured person, he was hauled up to the hovering helicopter. His life seems adrenaline-charged, and he self-identifies both as a law-enforcement officer and a doctor.

Richard Carmona: Of Puerto Rican descent; grew up poor in Harlem

A Latino of Puerto Rican descent, he grew up poor in Harlem, dropped out of school, joined the Army, got his GED, became a Special Forces medic in Vietnam, then attended medical school in California. After a stint at the National Institutes of Health, he was recruited to open a trauma center in Arizona, and moved to Tucson with his wife and four kids. He's been a Pima County deputy for years, working part time, of course, and is a trauma physician who teaches at the University of Arizona medical school. He works for a high-end destination spa company that has a foundation that delivers health help to underserved communities. His narrative draws veterans, women, Latinos, and, Democrats hope, moderates in sufficient numbers to turn Arizona blue.

'I am not a Hispanic candidate,' Carmona told The Daily Beast. 'I am an American candidate who happens to be of Hispanic heritage.'

Sharron Angle: Hosts Conservative Commandos: "Believe in the Constitution"

Here at CPAC, Angle is part of the much-loathed press as a co-host of Conservative Commandos, a radio program billed as being "For those who believe in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and the freedom in which to express those core values: Where the newsmakers go to be heard."

Angle sits behind the black rope in the Conservative Commandos booth. With one hand, she clutches tightly a microphone that reads "WNJC 1360". With the other, she fiddles with a gold chain around her neck. She doesn't say much, and doesn't look that interested.

But Angle says she likes her job on the radio. She does it "just to kind of keep in the game, you know? You need to be familiar with the press, especially when you run for office or you have a public persona. It's good to stay in contact with the press."

Throughout the course of several conversations, Angle expresses disdain for the press but acknowledges the importance of being someone the press cares about.

Stacey Abrams: Election loss: Something being legal does not make it right

Abrams refused to describe her Republican opponent Brian Kemp as the legitimate new governor after acknowledging her defeat to him a day earlier. Abrams suggested voter suppression played a role in the state's gubernatorial election and described Kemp-- who was the Secretary of State during the race--only as the "legal" governor. "He is the person who won an adequate number of votes to become the governor" in accordance with the law, Abrams said. "Something being legal does not make it right."

Glenn Youngkin: Firm offered matching gifts for social justice donations

Less than a week after the police murder of George Floyd, Youngkin's company, sprawling private equity firm the Carlyle Group, put out a press release, signed by Youngkin and his co-CEO, Kewsong Lee, promising "a special match" offer to employees who donate up to $1,000 to any one of three social justice organizations: the Equal Justice Initiative, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the NAACP.

Donald Trump: Time to "bring back God" to schools and public squares

[On God in schools]: "I will immediately sign a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity and other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content on our content," Trump added, claiming it was time to "bring back God" to schools and public squares.
