The Guardian (U.K.): on Energy & Oil

Ryan Zinke: Public lands opened for private company energy development

As the director of the National Park Service, at NPS we were hopeful [about] Ryan Zinke [when he was first appointed as Secretary of Interior], but we were soon disappointed, then appalled, as his doors were soon darkened by oil executives and climate deniers. Under Zinke, policies that planned for climate change's impacts on national parks were rescinded, and leasing of public lands for development was accelerated (despite a glut of oil). Millions of acres that were available for outdoor recreation will now be held by private companies for fossil fuel development. Many distinguished career public servants will be gone and many mid-level employees will be reconsidering their career choices. Regulations that protect our air, water and wildlife will be weakened and need rebuilding. And our options for addressing climate change will have been narrowed.

Scott Pruitt: Staunch advocate for continued use of fossil fuels

Like Trump, Pruitt was a staunch advocate for the continued use of coal and other fossil fuels, voiced skepticism about mainstream climate science and was a fierce critic of the Paris climate agreement. Trump cheered Pruitt's moves to expand fossil fuel production and roll back regulations opposed by corporate interests. After leaving the agency, Pruitt registered as an energy lobbyist in Indiana.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: Climate crisis used to push totalitarian controls on society

In recent interviews, he claims climate science is too complex and abstract to explain and that, "I can't independently verify that." He also says that the climate crisis is being used to push through "totalitarian controls on society" orchestrated "by the World Economic Forum, Bill Gates, and all of these megabillionaires."

Tim Walz: By 2040, 100% of utility power from carbon-free sources

Walz has forged a robust climate record during his two gubernatorial terms, most notably by signing one of the strongest green energy bills into law last year. The policy requires Minnesota to eliminate carbon from its electricity generation by 2040, obtaining 100% of its utilities from carbon-free sources. Only a handful of states are requiring the switch to carbon-free electricity to occur at such a rapid pace.

The climate victory came during a legislative session in which Democrats passed dozens of other green policies. Among them: a bill meant to streamline energy permitting that Walz signed in June. "This is a measure that will help protect our environment and get the clean energy projects that are going to help fight climate change in motion," he said.

During his tenure, the governor has also funded clean energy career training and allocated $2bn to natural resources, climate and energy projects in a bill that has been compared to the Inflation Reduction Act.
