Bernie Sanders: Cuba is in US sphere of influence; Ukraine is in Russia's

Putin may be a liar and a demagogue, but it is hypocritical for the US to insist that we do not accept the principle of "spheres of influence". For the last 200 years our country has operated under the Monroe Doctrine. Under this doctrine we have undermined and overthrown at least a dozen governments. In 1962 we came to the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union in response to the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba, 90 miles from our shore, which the Kennedy administration saw as an unacceptable threat to our national security.

To put it simply, even if Russia was not ruled by a corrupt authoritarian leader like Vladimir Putin, Russia, like the United States, would still have an interest in the security policies of its neighbors. Does anyone really believe that the United States would not have something to say if, for example, Mexico was to form a military alliance with a US adversary?

Hillary Clinton: January 6 insurrection at our capitol was a terrorist attack

Hillary Clinton has said that the US was still in a "real battle for our democracy" against pro-Trump forces on the far right. Clinton fended off suggestions that the world was now witnessing the twilight of US democracy, but said: "I do believe we are in a struggle for the future of our country."

Clinton was referring to a raft of state legislation promoted by Republicans aimed at restricting access to the ballot. "What is really, most concerning is that he continues to be destructive," she said. "The January 6 insurrection at our capitol was a terrorist attack," Clinton added, noting the parallel with the 9/11 attacks. "We are now much more worried about internal threats, and there are some who say you can't equate them, having planes flown into the World Trade Center and the terrible loss of life."

"That's a horrific external attack, but now we are engaged in a very serious unfortunate but real battle for our democracy against forces, either led by or inspired by Donald Trump."

Pope Francis: Weapons manufacturers are duplicitous; don't trust them

People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said.

Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry. "If you trust only men you have lost," he said in a long commentary about war, trust and politics. "It makes me think of managers & businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit of distrust, doesn't it?" he said to applause.

He also criticised those who invest in weapons industries, saying "duplicity is the currency of today--they say one thing and do another."

Vladimir Putin: Moscow's strategic objectives include "social turmoil" in US

Vladimir Putin personally authorised a secret spy agency operation to support a "mentally unstable" Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election during a closed session of Russia's national security council, according to what are assessed to be leaked Kremlin documents.

The key meeting took place on 22 January 2016, the papers suggest, with the Russian president, his spy chiefs and senior ministers all present. They agreed a Trump White House would help secure Moscow's strategic objectives, among them "social turmoil" in the US and a weakening of the American president's negotiating position.

Russia's three spy agencies were ordered to find practical ways to support Trump, in a decree appearing to bear Putin's signature. By this point Trump was the frontrunner in the Republican nomination race. A report prepared by Putin's expert department recommended Moscow use "all possible force" to ensure a Trump victory.

Independent experts say the report--"No 32-04\vd"--appears to be genuine.
