Bernie Sanders: 2019 OpEd: Bernie is best chance to beat Biden

Forget all the other Democratic candidates: the primary will come down to Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden. If we want to beat Trump, we should stick with Bernie. I think we can all agree that our country would be much better off if Bernie Sanders were competing for the Democratic nomination against Gloria La Riva. If that were the choice facing socialists in our fight to defeat Donald Trump, then it would make perfect sense for us to stand on the sidelines and watch these primaries play out.

The situation we find ourselves in is directly comparable to what faced Republicans in 2016: an unacceptable and eminently beatable frontrunner who is nevertheless guaranteed to win if the divided opposition can't unite around another candidate. Socialism is the politics of collective action. Every indicator we have says that Joe Biden is the candidate to beat, and every indicator we have points to one candidate as the best chance to beat him. It's still Bernie.

Marty Walsh: Put an end to Boston's bid for summer Olympics

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh refused to sign the host city contract that would put taxpayers on the line for Olympic debts and told reporters that the opposition to the Olympic bid, which got more media attention than anything else during his mayorship, was "about ten people on Twitter." Then the US Olympic Committee pulled Boston from the running. Walsh explained that the costs outweighed the perceived benefits, and that "our citizens were rightly hesitant to be supportive."

Lee Carter: I'm a socialist, "democratic socialist" is redundant

I don't describe myself as a democratic socialist. I describe myself as a socialist, because I feel that democratic socialism is a redundant term. One of the core pieces of socialism is that you have to have democratic control over the economy and politics. If it's not democratic, then it can't be socialism, just definitionally. The thing that makes me a socialist is that commitment to worker ownership.

Our choice really is socialism or barbarism. That's not a rhetorical device. It's not a catchy slogan. It's a reality. We saw at the Capitol that liberalism does not have an answer for the rise of fascists. They will continue getting more and more violent. They will continue getting bolder and bolder. The choice we have at this moment is to either build a mass working-class coalition that is militant in the defense of our people and our gains. Or we let the fascists win and that's unacceptable.
