On Energy & Oil: Fuel cells from propane are “a tremendous development”

Talking up alternative energy is classic Al Gore, but Dick Cheney took up the cause yesterday in Washington state, where environmental concerns could be an election key. Cheney received a briefing on fuel cells that produce electricity from natural gas or propane at a Spokane-area company which hopes to someday power homes and businesses with the cells. Cheney pronounced the technology, which company officials say doesn’t harm the environment, “a tremendous development for our entire nation.”

On Homeland Security: Swift retaliation for USS Cole terrorist attack

Dick Cheney urged “swift retaliation” against those responsible for the apparent suicide bombing of a US destroyer, an attack that is presumed to have killed 17 sailors. “Any would-be terrorist out there needs to know that if you’re going to attack, you’ll be hit very hard and very quick,” Cheney said after a speech at a senior citizens center. “It’s not time for diplomacy and debate. It’s time for action.” The apparent terrorist bombing of the USS Cole near Yemen has provided Cheney with a potent anecdote in calling for a stronger national defense. While not assigning blame in Thursday’s attack on the Navy ship, Cheney said, “it’s still a hostile and dangerous world out there.”

On Homeland Security: US military is best in world, but trend is wrong direction

Dick Cheney says Al Gore’s unwillingness to acknowledge the military’s problems with money, morale, and readiness makes him unfit to become commander-in-chief. “We’ve got the best military in the world today, but the trend is in the wrong direction,” Cheney said. “Either Al Gore doesn’t know what’s going on or he’s choosing not to tell the truth. That’s unacceptable in a man who would be commander-in-chief.” Gore’s campaign said Gore is committed to the military.

On War & Peace: US too soft on Iraq

Dick Cheney said yesterday that the Clinton administration had let the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, “slip off the hook” on UN weapons inspections. Cheney said the US had a “very robust” inspection capability under President Bush and after the Gulf War.

On Families & Children: Voted against WIC welfare nuttrition programs

He voted against the creation of the Department of Education and opposed funding for the Head Start program. He was one of only 16 House members who voted in 1983 against a nonbinding measure to protect a nutrition program for women, infants, and children from budget cuts.

On Foreign Policy: Cuba: replace sanctions with free trade enclave

Cheney has raised the notion, heretical in GOP circles, of revisiting the wisdom of American sanctions against Cuba. Cheney also has said that unilateral sanctions against other countries are “unwise.” Speaking at the libertarian Cato Institute in 1988, Cheney broached a possible loosening of the trade embargo against Cuba, suggesting a free trade enclave could be established. Cheney also declared that unilateral economic sanctions “almost never work.”

On War & Peace: Iran: against sanctions; makes oil deals there

Cheney’s oil company has conducted business in Iran and Libya by carefully maneuvering around US sanctions, using foreign-based subsidiaries and workers. Cheney has frequently fought to lift US sanctions against Iran despite concerns about terrorist activity. Just last month, Cheney said that the US should lift sanctions against Iran and allow US oil companies to invest there. “There’s been a decision not to allow US firms to invest significantly in Iran, and I think that’s a mistake,” Cheney said.
