Chuck Hagel: Supports insurance coverage for abortion for military women

[Sen. Schumer says in a press release], "On issues related to female service members, Senator Hagel provided key assurances. He said he is committed to implementing the Shaheen amendment to improve the reproductive health of military women."

[Mother Jones magazine describes that amendment as] an effort by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen to expand abortion access for military women who are raped. If Shaheen's measure passes, military families will finally have the same access to abortion that other federal employees already receive. The Department of Defense currently only provides abortion coverage if the life of the mother is at stake. If an Army medic serving in Afghanistan is raped and becomes pregnant, she can't use her military health plan to pay for an abortion. If she does decide to get an abortion, she will have to pay for it with her own money. And if she can't prove she was raped, she may have to look for services off base, which can be dangerous or impossible in many parts of the world.

Joe Manchin III: Pro-life; pro-NRA; anti-EPA

Manchin cheered West Virginia's junior senator, Jay Rockefeller, for trying to block the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases. Manchin is also pro-life and an NRA member, so I don't expect progressives are going to get particularly excited about him in any case.

Justin Amash: Would extend 14th Amendment rights to fetuses

He believes fetuses are protected by the 14th Amendment and supports banning all abortions.

[The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to former slaves, via the phrase "all persons born or naturalized in the United States... are citizens." Amash would interpret that as extending to the pre-born].

Merrick Garland: Record on abortion rights entirely blank

For the past 25 years, Supreme Court nomination battles have often been proxy skirmishes in the culture wars, particularly over abortion, which has been a litmus test for any potential court nominee. But with his appointment of DC Circuit Chief Judge Merrick Garland to fill the seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, President Barack Obama has left the anti-abortion foes a bit stymied.

That's because the DC Circuit, where Garland has served for the past 19 years, almost never ends up on the frontlines of the culture wars; cases involving abortion or gay marriage rarely appear on its docket, which is heavily weighted with regulatory issues. And as someone who spent most of his pre-judicial career as a federal prosecutor, Garland hasn't had many opportunities to weigh in on Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Despite having gone through the judicial confirmation process once before, his record on the subject appears to be almost entirely blank.

Pete Buttigieg: Offered anti-abortion clinic help away from abortion clinic

An abortion clinic--[in] a city without a single provider--was trying to open. A crisis pregnancy center was trying to open up directly next door. Buttigieg eventually barred the CPC from its desired location. But he did so without ever taking a stand on reproductive rights. He even offered to "help" the anti-abortion organization open elsewhere, despite evidence that the vast majority of crisis pregnancy centers provide false or misleading information to the women they claim to serve.
