Barry Moore: Allow tax credits for parents for private schools

HB84: Alabama Accountability Bill: On tax credits for families with students in failing schools to attend another public or private school and for scholarship donations

NPR analysis: Gov. Robert Bentley has signed a bill that gives tax credits to parents who want to transfer their children from a failing public school to another public or private school. Democrats and teachers' groups say the bill underwent massive changes, including allowing schools to choose which students they will accept. "This is very important to very successful school systems," [one pro-school-choice advocate] says, "especially systems around Birmingham, that don't necessarily want to see a flood of students pouring over their borders and into their school system."

Legislative Outcome: Passed House 51-26-26 on 2/28/2013; State Rep. Barry Moore voted YES; Passed Senate 22-11-1 on 3/1/2013; Signed by Governor Robert Bentley on Mar/14/2013

Chris Dodd: Education is the heart of who we are

Q: What do you think the toughest choice you have left to make is?

A: I would say the single largest issue in many ways for us to grapple with is education, because it’s the heart of who we are, both in terms of our governance and economic strength and the future. And convincing everyone in the country of the importance and the priority of that issue is something that I think is going to be critical for the success of our country in the 21st century.

Eric Schmitt: No evidence of increased threats towards school officials

Schmitt signed a letter protesting an Oct. 4 memorandum from Attorney General Merrick Garland that sought to address an increase in hostility and threats toward school officials. As schools reopened this year, reports have emerged describing intimidation and harassment directed at school board members and other education staff. Schmitt and others said there's no evidence of an increase in threats toward school officials and described the memorandum as an effort to chill free speech.

Kirsten Gillibrand: College tuition in exchange for public service

Tell every young person in this country that if you do a year of public service, you could have two years of community college or state school free. We know that we have lots of service industries desperate for young workers. If you open up public service to those industry groups and incentivize young people to commit a year or two to that, it's going to not only create pipelines into new jobs but change the heart of these kids in a generation.

Maura Healey: Pandemic requires additional support for public schools

The right to a public education is constitutionally protected in Massachusetts, and Healey said in order to honor that right, the current system needs additional money from the federal government--with protections for public schools over private schools. "I don't know why we don't recognize that fundamentally as a society, not only it's the right thing to do, it's just bedrock to building the kind of community, economy and state that we aspire to by supporting education."

Sonia Chang-Diaz: Young people shouldn't have to carry decades of student debt

Things like giving every kid a fair and strong chance in life; making it so that we don't all have to sit in traffic for hours on end; making it so that you don't have to worry about going bankrupt if you have a medical emergency in your family; aspiring that young people do not have to carry decades worth of student debt on their backs after working for years to get a degree. These are not radical ideas.
