On Homeland Security: Democracy demands competent civilian control of military

On confirmation hearing: "I understand and respect the reservations that some of you have expressed about having another recently-retired general at the head of the Department of Defense," Austin said. "The safety and security of our democracy demands competent civilian control of our armed forces. The subordination of military power to the civil." Austin also sought to allay the fears of some committee members by promising to surround himself with "experienced, capable civilian leaders."

On Principles & Values: Orders stand-down to address extremism within armed forces

Austin has signed a memo directing commanding officers and supervisors to institute a one-day stand-down to address extremism within the nation's armed forces. "We will not tolerate actions that go against the fundamental principles of the oath we share, including actions associated with extremist or dissident ideologies," the memo reads. "Service members, DoD civilian employees, and all those who support our mission, deserve an environment free of discrimination, hate, and harassment."
